How forgiving is BMW?
My warranty expired literally two weeks ago and my water pump just failed this morning. My car has 47k miles on it.
How forgiving is BMW when it comes to expensive shit that goes wrong days after the warranty expires? Do I have case to make or am I shit out of luck?

Dealer just quoted me at $1500 to replace the cooling/water pump. Damn that's high!
I asked him if they could work with me on the price given my warrant just expired. He said he would call BMW North America to find out if they can make an exception or subsidize my repair. Keeping my fingers crossed but I'm not hopeful. Either way, there is no excuse for a water pump to fail after less than 50k miles. This is very frustrating, to say the least! I hope this is not a preview of BMW ownership, post-warranty.

Welcome to German cars where stuff fails pre-mature thats not suppose to fail..
My Honda & Nissan water pumps lasted well over 100k miles, My nissan is a 92 still on original and my Honda got a new one only cause I was doing the timing belt. Best of luck and Keep us posted My dealer has been pretty good in NJ

I'd have the car scanned to see when the first water pump fail codes showed up. My car whent 10,000 from when the frst time the code showed up until the pump failed. I'd bet anything that there is a code for a failing water pump in the ECU prior to two weeks ago.

The service rep calls this morning and says that the code only showed a one-time failure.
So, I'm shit out of luck with BMW NA and the same with the trying to find a code loophole. The service rep said that the service manager is offering me a "20% discount" which would essentially be $300 of the stated estimate of $1500. I'm fucking pissed off but I don't want to hassle with this situation any more and I need my car back. Not a happy camper.

http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E90-335...ter/ES2581099/ There is no way theres it costs $1000 labor & coolant flush, Find an INDY thats a rip off. From what I hear should be about 4hrs labor.

The situation has been resolved. I got the dealer down to $1000 for the parts and installation for both the water pump and thermostat. That was roughly the same price as the local INDYs are charging and I didn't have to hassle with getting the car towed over there.
I'm not happy about this but $1k sure as hell beats $1.5k and I can count on the quality of the work from the dealer.

My dealer back dated shit that went wrong, when I took it in, because it had been going on for a while. They literally asked me if there was anything wrong before my warranty expired. Just ask nicely.

For most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the BT Tool or Peake Research Tool. They contain the actual BMW codes as opposed to a generic OBII scanner. Pays for itself on the 1st scan. http://www.bavariantechnic.com/ OR
http://www.peakeresearch.com/ (less expensive, but does not reset battery info) |

On my 09 X5 the water pump and t-stat left me stranded I was out of warranty by miles, not time and it was a goodwill repair. But, my X5 has a bad history of reliability.

Call BMW NA, be nice, and ask very very humbly (most probably there will be a 21 year old girl from NJ on the other end)
![]() Tell her that it is not nice and if you had more than one BMW tell her that you were looking to buy a 3rd or 4th etc etc Good Luck |

Well, seeing as I've already taken care of the repair for $1,000 there is not much BMW NA can do for me now. Thanks for the input tho guys.

Not worth your time for a phone call to maybe get back $1000? I had a tire issue early with the Bridgestones. AFTER replacing with new, and not having bad tires for inspection, BMW NA refunded my purchase price.
