Perspective 335i Owner - Burger Tuning Build

Hey guys,

My name is Blake, I'm relatively new to the BMW world, but no stranger to the modification world. I currently have two 600+ HP diesels (and have built a few in the past), but I am selling one and grabbing a 335i. I have been looking at the '07-'10 335i Sedans with the 6AT and paddle shifters. Haven't found one I love... yet. And here is where the questions begin:

What're the differences between the '07-'08 335i's and the '09-'10 335is? I notice the slight difference in body styling.

Secondly, how reliable are these cars when modified?

How well do the automatic transmissions hold up?

I plan on doing a small build. Looking at going with downpipes, full exhaust, JB4, dual cone intake, oil catch can, chargepipe with BOV, intercooler, possibly water/meth, possibly an oil cooler, rims and tires (still undecided on which ones), etc. Anything else I should add for reliability or performance? I plan on running just the JB4 to being with, run a few WOT runs to ensure there are not any weak links before voiding my warranty. I will be running this thing down the track a few times, but will also be my DD, so reliability is a must. I want it to be built right. I will also be changing all filters and fluids in the car after purchasing it with OEM synthetic fluids and OEM filters (oil, fuel, transmission, coolant, differential, etc.). I also planned on ordering all the parts from Burger Tuning, just to simplify things. Honestly, I've got around a $4,000-$5,000 budget for mods. These things are relatively cheap and easy to mod, compared to my diesels, where just a tuner, intake, and exhaust can set me back over $2,750.

Any suggestions, comments, or help will be greatly appreciated! I'm sure I will have a few questions eventually.

Just read that, actually. I have some questions. Where can you find E85? And does the JB4 have a map setting for E85?

Yes the JB4 has an E85 map, well its an auto-tuning map based for E85 which is map 5. Make sure you get the JB4 G5 ISO which is the latest JB4 released and the Isolated boost control is absolutely incredible with the G5 and E85... If you want to get even more out of the car, Terry from Burger Tuning has a BMS Flash that is done through the COBB Acessport which he is a able to further adjust the fuel ceilings, timing, ect that you run with the JB4 G5 ISO with the special firmware. It really has benifited me and my car because im running a pretty high E85 mixture. I promise you wont be disspointed with the mods you have named that your going to do. And Terry's customer service is absolutely incredible and answers emails when you send logs or have questions in sometimes a matter of seconds lol. WELCOME to having some fun....well almost welcome

Look for the "flex finder" mobile device (iPhone) app for E-85 station locations. JB4 does have provisions in mapping for that fuel if mixed to about a 30-50% E-85-gas mix. Understand also that the N54 engine is on model years 2007-2008 (and all 335is models), but the N55 engine is in 2009 through current models. N55 is excellent, but N54 has more tuning potential for twin turbo boost potential at high rpm and power, where the N55 loses efficiency at that range.

N54 isn't only 07-08, it is 2007-2010 YM.
And Blake, I would make sure you get one with sport and oil cooler.

Funny, my 09 has a N54.

OP, if you're getting a JB4, spend the extra coin and buy a cobb AP as well. Especially if you're getting an auto and if you have intentions of running E85.

Get an 09, stay away from the 07 and 08s. They fixed a few problems in 09 like injectors, vanos, sepentine belt hit, bigger wastegate actuator, new body style on e90, and I can't remember what else.

Is the oil cooler a factory option?

Can anyone confirm if all '09's have the N54? That's the engine in wanting. The Cobb is definitely on my list, I may wait on that, though.

Any updates to the HPFP? I've heard these cars can have some issues with injectors and the HPFP when first tuned.

Most 09 335s should have the N54 motor.

if you get an 09, it will have the factory oil cooler, some of the early YM didnt have it.

Yes, all 09s have the n54. Just wikipedia "Bmw n54" and you will see its full application of cars, plus used in all 07-10 YM 335's.

You would still have warranty on the HPFP, but most cars out there have had it replaced by now. You might push some injectors over the edge if they are original ones on a 09YM, new ones are easy to fix though.

My 1/2009 335i Coupe had an oil cooler but I had sport package. I dont think that mattered in 2009, only in 2007 and 2008. It also had an N54 engine by no accident. N55 didn't come out till 2011 but some late model 2010 may have N55, not sure about that though.

I would have 2007's like the plague. First model year had quite amount of bugs, different ECU, and they are getting a little tired as they will have higher mileage.

Eitherway looking for an oil cooler is easy, just look in the passenger side front fender for oil cooler venting. Other 335i without and oil cooler will have a closed passenger side front fender.

If you have any questions about performance modifications and options we have a handful of options and personal experience with the platform.

What should I expect to pay for an '09 E90?

LOL yes.... Dyno numbers in my signature. Track times should prove a little higher numbers. But I'm looking for something a little better on fuel, and trying to avoid paying $3.75 a gallon for diesel.

There was a discussion on here stating that the earlier 335's had forged internals which were discontinued in the later years.
