DIY: Nexus 7 Dash Mount

I've been looking for a way to mount my tablet for a while now. Lots of stuff out there and some custom mounts. But its really hard to find something decent on the cheap. The fugly big bracketted vent mounts? no way.

I was looking in to building my own custom mount and the "BMW station for iphone" really inspired me to make a very simple cheap mount.

Number 7: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...95&hg=84&fg=95

.. and here's the end result:

All you need is:

1. 2 x L brackets similar to this (one of the brackets are bent - this was the one i used for testing, the final result was much cleaner):

http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/hardware/...?skuId=9291477

2. Strong double sided tape (or a strong glue)

3. A cheap cover for your nexus:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...E:L:OU:US:3160

4. Marker and tools to bend/hold metal. Your choice.

Take out the leather parts from the cover - just rip it out. All you need is the plastic shell. Clean it up. Dont leave any glue.

The diagram below is pretty self-explanatory:

Just make sure you use two brackets in the back to balance the weight

Once you're happy with the fit, push the interior trim back in and you will have a very stable mount.

I'm quite interested. I'm currently doing something similar with my iPhone - it usually wears an otterbox, the case for which clips into an included belt holder. I have that holder clipped onto a protoype of cardboard strip running from tucked under the center speaker/vent grill to tucked in behind the wood trim piece. Works well enough, but I want something cleaner. This looks adaptable.

Updated my first post with the DIY.

Good luck using it when your wearing sunglasses. The n7 screen is polarized the same as sunglasses so you can't see anything when its sitting horizontally. I got a mount that rotates so it can be vertical in the day when I'm wearing my glasses.

That's not really different than the stock radio.
You can't see the display with polarized glasses.

That's true.
I plan to mount my Nexus 7 this way.

Waiting for the shell to arrive.
I was going to use the BMW GPS mount, but it isn't really much better than this.

Well, except if you accelerate hard it'll torque the connector and rip out

I was thinking of going with the DIY at the top of the page with one exception.
Use the following quick release to remove the tablet:
http://www.proclipusa.com/product-ca...moveclips.aspx

Or go with the quick release and a Kuda mount.

ProClip also makes a swivel and I was thinking of that to add tilt swivel capability.

http://www.proclipusa.com/product-ca...velmounts.aspx

Definitely the quick release system.
Probably with the DIY. This offers a clean look that you can take out and only leave a small bracket in front of the dash.

I just got a nexus 7 to get crackin' on my plans for this as well.

I notice you've currently got the radio set to 'aux' - do you have a USB sound card that the N7 is driving or something? Or are you just getting audio from somewhere else entirely (like a phone)?

I ask because I'm trying to get Rdio working on the N7, but unfortunately it seems the only audio option is browsing the file structure via USB (so no streaming).

i have an 'iphone' bluetooth audio adapter in the armrest connected to the aux and power. its meant for iphone/ipod docks, but you can use it the way i am using...

this is the unit i bought from curry's:

and a cable similar to below from ebay:

and a usb charger:

I've taken down the N7 mount now...moved on to an AppRadio.
