:: ECS Tuning :: Automatic Transmission Service Kits
![]() The automatic transmission on most BMWs is said to have lifetime fluid... we here at ECS as well as many transmission manufactures recommend service every 30k miles. ![]() ![]() ![]() Over the life of a vehicle, the transmission can often be overlooked when performing routine maintenance. If left unserviced, the automatic transmission fluid will break down, causing the valve body and filter to become contaminated with deposits and sludge. This will lead to poor shifting, slipping, and ultimately transmission failure. Click HERE to Select your Vehicle > Drivetrain / Transmission / Service Kits

awesome......is shell the recommended transmission fluid for our AT's? does it come with all seals and gaskets needed for level 2?
does all of the fluid need to be used in order for a proper fluid change? Last edited by gian335; 04-10-2012 at 12:14 AM. |

You should end up with a partial bottle at the end of the transmission service, our research has shown amount of fluid included with the kits is enough to service the transmission without draining and refilling the torque converter.
Both the Shell fluid included in the kits and the RedLine fluid meet the specifications for the transmissions. And yes the level two kits included the needed parts and filters for your transmission servicing.

Glad I came across this thread! I got a quote recently from a shop for just under $500 to service the transmission. Got the level 2 Redline D4 fluid/filters for $220 after shipping. Great deal. My poor abused auto transmission needs this badly after 70k hard miles. I'm hoping that this smooths my shifts, they're starting to get a bit rough

Just preformed the Level 2 it at 60k miles, the car was starting to get sluggish shifting. After the service its shifting smooth again.

The bolts which hold the pan in place are not torque to yield bolts (stretch bolts) and are reusable.

We've put together a pdf to help anyone out who's looking to service their transmission. Now remember this is a write up for the E39 525i but the process is very similar on other cars, this makes for a great guide!
HERE is a link to the pdf Also below is our automatic transmission service video

Just wondering if I could take the pan off and clean it up. Then put new fluid in it with out changing the pan. Will the pan leak or car I reuse it ?

It's suggested to replace the pan gasket after dropping the pan. Problem with that in your car is the gasket is built into the pan and not available separately. I would suggest a drain and fill over dropping the filter/pan if you don't want to replace the filter/pan.
