we weren't on the base. The gate's were closed, so we rolled into a deserted parking lot.

Actually that is considered the base.

You can drive in the base anytime since alot of the wherehouses have been converted to business buildings. There is a stretch on the runway that's usually open during the day but it was closed when we got there.
