Hit a sunken manhole cover
Driving back into Aberdeen on Sunday night in the pitch black I got the fright of my life hitting a sunken manhole cover.
The depth is 2 1/8 of an inch to the lip. I should have measured maximum depth as the lip is another 1/4 of an inch and that is without any weight on it. The road has always been a mess. You can see countless patch repairs around the manhole cover and for the length of the road. The damage to the car isn't as bad as I thought. The front wheel is amazingly fine but the tyre has lost its shape. A Bridgestone runflat too. The rear is slightly out but repairable. I've asked the council for a claims form to cover replacement, repair and tracking to be checked. I wonder if they will pay up? Here is the manhole in question. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Moving on from laughing boy, a few years ago I dropped into a pothole and buckled a wheel and there was some suspension damage. After getting a repair quote from the dealer Sheffield City Council paid out with the minimum of fuss. Good luck with the claim. You've certainly done the right thing with the pictures.
Mwp4me, I also had my eyes shut. |

What if that hole was a person instead fool. You'd be on Jeramy Kyle still suing the council and we'd all have to pay for a dick on the road. Let me know when you are on the road and I will pull over. |

I hate the state of the roads in the UK! I have counted 6 pot holes I have to dodge on my daily commute to work, and it's only 25 miles! Depending on the council they should pay up but claims have gone through the roof in the past few years and they don't like to pay out!
good luck with your claim! |

I hit something very similar last night, then had a dream that I had to replace my alloy with a steel rim
![]() Have you reported it to your local council or http://www.fixmystreet.com/ ? Edit* just read you've reported it |

I hit one in London some years ago, phoned the council and the hoops they were going to make me jump through to make a claim meant I just sucked it up.
Not so sure I would be willing to do that with how much a new tyre/wheel would cost now! |

These holes are everywhere manholes in the road and assholes on the forum (thats you MWP4me).
Seriously though don't give up on the council claim if you have the time and patience. The wheels of the council turn very slowly but if you keep on it and jump through all the hoops you will have a case. |

Hopefully someone has flagged it up and claimed before you. Go for it, As someone posted a link to a news article a while ago about the size of the funds council has put aside for pot hole claims. Its substantial. Best of luck. |

I'd go back, put the tape measure up against a straight edge layed across the road and above the m/hole.
This will clearly show the depth that the m/hole is from the surface of the road. Down here they won't consider anything unless it's deeper than 75mm,and without clear photographic evidence. Good luck Kerr, persistence pays

75mm is deeper than what the wall section is on our tyres!
I would hope someone would have complained before me. It is a busy road so lots of people would have hit it. Also behind that wall is flats. The drain makes a loud bang when running over it so I would imagine the flat owners would have complained about noise. I did request a damage claim form and reported the damage on Sunday using the council's online reporting system. I've yet to get any acknowledgment. Last edited by Kerr; 01-24-2013 at 10:55 AM. |
