JB4 MPG

Does JB4 affect your MPG and if so, by how much?

depends on how you drive.. i was able to increase my mileage while on the highway but in town when im on the gas all the time it went down obviously

Yes it does. With the latest ISO firmware, the waste gate default position can be moved to a point where there is less duty cycle on the wastegates during cruise conditions. This means slightly less boost when you first press on the gas pedal. Excessive precharging causes a decrease in fuel economy. I have noticed about a 1 mpg increase on the interstate at 80 mph which is where I normally cruise

At first, your fuel economy is going to go down as you constantly enjoy your newfound power (IE you flooring it a lot more), but as you grow accustomed to it, it will return to normal. The JB4 does not affect cruise fuel economy negatively unless you specifically set it up that way with a very agressive default WG position.

By no accident if you have a heavy foot the car will be faster and require more fuel to go faster.

It depends on the firmware, the way you drive, and the gas. If you drive conservatively with economy settings you will easily pick up more MPG from the increased timing the JB4 can target (if you aren't on terrible gas). This is especially true running E85 mixes. The loss in economy is not nearly as large as one would think. You will actually save money by running E85.

1mpg lost in the city 2-3 gained on the highway (i tend to use the throttle less).

granted at the track (the one with turns), i do 8-10mpg vs the seemingly constant 12 stock.

so take that as u will

I have seen on the OBC 35-37mpg @ indicated 75mph on flat surfaces with the wastegate position set to "0," meaning no boost until I really ask for it. I'm running an earlier ISO 11C program which has seperate wastegate, and lag-fix value's vs. the later firmware

so yes, for some of is on the G5 board, MPG has improved in steady state cruising situations

Not sure if its better or worse but 21/22 is normal for me inside Raleigh City limits & 30 odd over the interstate.

Testing new firmware versions can push it down to 18.5/19

For some reason, after switching to iso, my OBC give a highway mpg of about 22 but doing the math says its close to 28. Anybody know why the computer thinks it's lower?

e85 vs Gasoline Comparison Test

I understand that higher timing and running a little lean can increase milage, but I don't really understand how running e85 can increase my economy or save me money. All the test results indicate the opposite. Can you elaborate on your statement?

I spend more when I mix E85 and 93 because the loss in fuel economy is greater than the price difference.

Because with the JB4 the extra timing from E85 increases your fuel economy. The economy will still be worse than on 93 only, but only by 2-3 mpg. This difference is easily made up by the 70-80c cheaper gas. I don't know if a flash tune works the same way, and I am almost positive Edmunds test doesn't take the benefit of this.

I don't share your experience. I get about 25% worse mileage. On straight 93 I can go 320 miles on a tank. I'm closer to 230 on 40% E85. It's not a lot of money, but definitely more than the 0.60/gal I'm saving.

It's more expensive for me, but the money to horsepower ratio is better than most mods out there.

I agree that COBB, PROcede, and now JB4 can take advantage of timing to increase fuel economy, but when you look at national averages for E85 MPG/BTU adjusted prices for E85 is still over $4 per gal. I also doubt if Edmunds did anything other than off the shelf testing of flex fuel rated vehicles. But I know for a fact I can't get anywhere near 30 mpg on E85 and the offset in price isn't enough to make it viable, not to mention you can't find it off the Interstate unless you live in Minnesota. I think if someone wanted to get the most MPG, they would be better off running 87 oct with lots of meth for the times they need to get on it, but that's just my opinion.

Which firmware? What's your lagfix at? Do you drive differently? I get 25 average with 91 and 22-23 with E85 50%.

I am not saying you will get best MPG. I am just saying it cost me less to run E85 and I get more power so its a no brainer. E85 is $3.10 at my local station compared to $3.80 for 91. With my settings in my car I got 26.5mpg last night at average speed 75mph and 5-6 bursts to 100/110 over 60 miles. I can get 29-30 but I cant go over 80mph to do that and need to average closer to 65.

I agree the added power out weighs everything. Even with Premium at only $3.35 in Portland and the fact I only save $1.50 per tank with E85, I still drive downtown to the nearest station to fill up. I also agree if you took a stock 335 with pump gas and a tuned 335 with e85 running lean with timing, it would probably get better milage with the e85 if you can keep your foot out of it...

E85 + Tune =
