I just bought a used 335i and noticed that I have rubber valve stems. Does this mean I don't have the tpms monitors? Reason I'm asking is because I'm buying new wheels and would like to know before installing tires. Thanks!

Yes. It has them. All cars in the US must have them as of 2007.

You don't have them. TPMS have metal valve stems. You can also check realoem to find out if your car has them.

My mistake. The legislation took effect in September of 2007. So I guess if you have rubber stems and a build before then, you dont have them.

2008+ US models have TPMS sensors. 2007 models are mixed so a simple check of the valve stem is used to confirm whether or not you have them.

Yes, it is true. 2006 and 2007 Model years with OE rubber valve stems have the FTM (flat tire monitoring) system which does not use TPMS (tire pressure monitoring sensors).

Wheel rotation, as the tire goes flat the outside diameter gets smaller and wheel spins faster, setting off code.

Correct. I believe it use the ABS sensors/system to monitor this.

So if I have a 2006 prelci 325xi and I buy new rims. I won't need tpms sensors? And it will be monitored by ftm?

Can someone confirm this? or should I stop buy the dealer and asked them. I don't know as I only bought the car last Oct and am looking to buy some summer wheels.

If you have rubber stems and no TPMS malfunction light is on, then you do not have the RDC TPMS system (valve stem sensors mounted in the wheels)

The only exception to this is some new wheel designs that relocate the TPMS sensor (strapped or bracketed to the wheel) and implement a regular valve stem, but I'm sure you do not have to worry about that

I have a 2007 model with a NOV/2006 build date...NO TPMS!!!

At first, I was disappointed in the fact that I had no TPMS, only the system the rest of the automotive world uses outside of the USA.

Now I am soooo happy that I don't have to mess with having to install a set of $300+ sensors in my wheels!

Be happy you don't have TPMS!
