Could do with some new discs and pads, front and rear. Don't know whether to go with OEM or try some drilled and grooved discs with a up rated pad? Has anyone tryed any other breaks and were they any good?

I like filter coffee during my breaks and I sometimes like to break a Kit kat in half too

With regards to brakes, I asked the same question about my 335d and most seemed to suggest OEM brake discs with Ferrodo DS2500 pads although I think I'll be trying the Hawk pads over the DS2500's.

Actually to be fair. If ur not tracking the tracking or have extremely fast road use. Oem set up is great. Or try the above.

Against mine and others good judgement I bought a set of those drilled-only MTEC discs (http://www.mtecbrakes.co.uk/) because they were really cheap and worth a punt. (£180 delivered for all four drilled on a 335i).

Horror stories of noise, warping and cracking rained upon me, my wheels would fly off, the world would end and I would be dead in a week unless I spent £500 on BMW discs....

But they are brilliant. No noise, straight as a dye, no squealing, no cracking, no vibrations - and they look great - changes the whole look of the car.

They actually vibrate much less (i.e none) under heavy use than the factory plain discs ever did - and I had the car from new.

I use them with EBC yellow pads (limited choice on 335i). The pads cost £30 more than the discs! But they work very well indeed, very sharp from cold, brilliant.

The only complaint was discs were still full of machine sudsoil and swarf, so I has to thoroughly wash them out with hot water / fairy liquid / hosepipe before fitting. But discs come greased anyway, which needs stripping off.

You could order them black coated too to stop rust, but theres was a gloss coating and I wanted matte, so I sprayed my own.

But you could equally just buy these discs with cheap Jurid/textar (BMW OE) pads from Eurocarparts, only about £80 all round.

....except DS2500 are not available for 335i/d (unfortunately as they are good pads), but they are also not ECE R90 approved, so not road legal either

Really? I found the OEM (335i is big setup too) to be awful.

The brakes on my E90 330i were fine for everyday road use. If tracking the car or wanting more performance from really from really fast road use. Then yes pad/fluids/lines upgrade. Then if that isnt enough then BBK. Obviously the brakes on the 335 are better than the 330 but maybe you thought they were awful because you have a modded 335. Where as OP has a 25i I believe?

doughboy and xenon , i think you guys should change brake fluid and SS hoses. makes the OEM setup night and day difference. Give you alot more control ,almost no brake fade and confidence.

I did that first off, hoses, fluid and new pads. It was lot better fade wise due to the fluid, but then that showed up the heat-vibration on the OE discs, so they needed doing next...

The car wasn't modded power wise when the lines/fluid/pads went on, but they are such heavy cars the OE brakes will always struggle, as soon as the JB3 went on that really showed them up.

I have some yellow stuff pads with OEM discs, braided lines/fluid change. Even cold the bite from the pads is pretty reassuring and defiantly better than the stock set up in-terms of pedal feel/fading. To really get better performance I think you have to go down the BBK route, but needing to spend atleast £2K for a decent setup for me is wasted money, since I have no plans to take the car to the track.

You seem to have a winner there ; look nice. right price, better performance, no down sides.
Any reason why you didnt buy the drilled + grooved version ?

Just didn't fancy grooves, just a preference.

E90 M3 are just drilled, they look good so I stuck with that.

Just had a look at the mtech website, good prices, this is what they have stated on their website about their drilled discs:

The benefits of drilled brake discs over standard plain discs, is that drilled discs can aid Improved Cooling Under Braking. The holes are drilled completely through the discs allowing heat to escape.Drilled brake discs are not recommended for racing or other hard use.

A little odd to state drilled discs offer better cooling but than to say not their drilled discs are not for "hard" use .

I had DS2500 + RB600 Fluid subjectively felt a lot better and certainly resisted fade more than the OEM set up.

After about 8 laps on the ring the vibration from discs/deposits became pretty bad, so if you intend to do track work i would suggest better discs.

I didn't buy them for any reason other than they are cheap and look good.

There was no expectation on my part, drilled discs do nothing except pretend to be 'go faster', which is fine by me.

The fact they turned out to be better than OE is a bonus. (noise, vibes wise)

They ARE NOT a performance product, they are just cheap discs with holes drilled in them!
