race a 335?

So I pull up behind a 335 at a light and he is next to a 330. The 330 start to creep forward and when the light turns green, the 335 takes off, air ripping out of his exhuast, but the 330 just creeps forward. I pass the 330 and at the next light I am next to the 335.

I thought, do I want to floor it to see how how good I can keep up (really, how bad I'll be left behind ) because I am curious. I decide not to give the 335 the pleasure and just let him tear away.

My question to you guys is who would have raced a car they know they can't beat just to see the results? How embarrassingly behind would I have been after a 1/4 mile?

Why would you care at all anyways? I mess around with Porsches and stuff on the highway, and the occasional exotic. I mess with M3s and any other interesting cars too. Not to say that I full on race everywhere I go, I just have fun when there's interesting cars around.

Besides, if you feel insecure because of losing a straight line race, what I always make sure to remember is that I could have bought many cars that are faster than my own for the price. The key here is in a straight line.

I'm rambling on a bit here. Yes, you would get whooped by a 335i. If it's stock, you may be able to almost keep up with one if you have a 330i or if you have a 3-stage intake with a tune and a couple other mods. Alternatively, you could take it to the twisties where it would depend more on driver skill than raw power.

well... im conviced that if the other guy was driving a stock 335xi auto and you have a n52 rwd 6MT car with catless headers, 3 stage IM, tune, etc it would be close... too bad that doesnt really ever happen

335 had to be awd and a auto.

330 needed all bolt ones(manifold, tune, header) 6mt and RWD

haha the manifold isn't necessary on a 330i

As I said, curiosity. Don't tell me you wouldn't watch a drag race between a 328i, 330i, and a 335i just for fun. What if we threw in an M3 into the mix? Knowing the results, it would still be interesting to see just how different these cars really are.
I wasn't being insecure about it at all. I just wasn't looking to stroke that guys ego. That guy was obviously aware he was in the presence of 2 other 3 series. I just hoped he warmed up his engine since we were only a mile out of the neighborhood where I drop my kid off.

Jeez you 328 guys crack me up. "I bet if the 328 had intake, exhaust, headers, chip, and a 3-stage manifold it could hang with a 335, at least for a little while"

NO IT COULD NOT!!! Look, I love my inline 6 as much as the next guy, but 328's and 330's CANNOT hang with 335's! It's not possible unless the 328/330 is supercharged, turbo'd, or nos'd. END OF STORY.

The 335 is a full second quicker JUST to 60 MPH, and almost 2 seconds quicker in the 1/4 mile. You might as well say a V6 Mustang could hang with a Mustang GT, "at least for a little while".

Just enjoy your ride and forget trying to think it's fast. It's not.

It still wouldn't have been close if the 330i had every bolt in in the world. A stock 335 would still walk it.

It would be more interesting to see a n51 328 vs a 330i
Now that is a race.

to be competitive with 335i we need to put down 260+ WHP on a dyno.

The most I've seen is 230-235 hp on Dynojet

Lol at this thread.. The only thing that would interest me is a full bolt on 330 vs 335 stock even though the outcome is obvious. But after a while you'll realize there is no point and start working on aggressive cosmetics to make your car more intimidating to other drivers lol. =)

Probably, I have not seen any converted 328i put down more than a 330i with a tune. There is a 5 -10 hp difference or something like that.

Exceptions perhaps exist in Germany through a euro tune.
Headers may be the equalizer for all n52

There's nothing wrong with seeing how much faster another car is than yours. I do it all the time...given I'm more of a general car enthusiast than a "my car is the best car in the universe" type and I definitely wouldn't say that I'm Bothered (in the least) by loosing. I get all giddy (in a very manly way, of course) in appreciation for the raw power of a vehicle when a tuned super car leaves me like I'm standing still or when an all out race car just locks in and takes off around the twisties (given I get a bit more excited when I keep up).

There are three basic outcomes to your scenario...
1. You both take off, the 335 is way faster and you both leave knowing all the same things you thought you did when you stopped at the light
2. He has traction trouble, can't drive stick, or any number of other variables, and you lose but keep close enough to him to leave him second guessing his own abilities and leave you quite content with not being left in the dust.
3. He suffers from limp mode or some other combination of those items listed above, you wind up in front, and he never forgets it for all of eternity

With any of the three options, its a lot more fun to be the guy in the car that is supposed to loose.

hahaha I enjoy doing this with e60 M5's and motorcycles! Its always a pleasure to hear their engines roar. Actually I don't really keep pushing my car... once i get that aural pleasure, I'm left in the dust satisfied ^_^

While the 335 is much faster than the 328 your statement about the 1/4 mile times is completely incorrect. There is about 1 second difference in the quarter mile time between the N52 and N55 powered vehicles. The torque and power delivery of the N55 will allow for sub 5 second 0-60 times with some abuse and sticky tires but on average it is a low 5 second 0-60 vehicle.
