Porsche Cayman S 24hr test drive pics

Collected the car from Porsche Leeds at 1pm on Wednesday. Full tank of fuel and a polite request not to pile the miles on

First impressions:

Looks great in the grey. Real sense of occasion when you get in. Feels like a sports car should. Simple instrumentation, everything to hand, spacious for a 2 seater, but compact. Excellent driving position once I got used to the offset brake pedal.

Optional extras on the model supplied:
Metallic paint, alloy handbrake and gear shift levers, sat nav and phone prep, full leather, BOSE upgrade.

In the city:
Feels heavier than the BM and is definitely noisier. Very precise gear change, heavy-ish clutch, weighty steering. Odd whine to the engine at low revs, that you soon get used to. Headturner! Loads of looks from young and old. Not to everyone's taste, but I love it!

Motorway:
Rapid, quite a bit of tyre noise, engine sounds great under acceleration. Very poised and steady.

A roads:

Amazing. Really flies, every moment a joy! Sweeps around bends and dispatches slower traffic with ease.

B roads:

Wow! Took this baby up over the moors towards Skipton, past Bolton Abbey, Blubberhouses Moor, Stump Cross etc. Anyone familiar with this area of Yorkshire will know that the roads are built for keen drivers and mid-week are pretty quiet. The car is simply fantastic. Very rapid acceleration in every gear, superb at overtaking just about anything and the engine HOWLS up to 7000rpm. Holds the road like glue and inspires huge confidence. Every corner is such great fun. (Wife told me to take it easy. Yeh, right!). Impossible to describe how it handles. Go drive one! I've never drive such a FUN machine. And triple figures arrive with such ease, (on private land).

Verdict:

Love the BMW, but this Porsche is on my most wanted list. Already doing the sums and working out how and when! :rocks::rocks:

Definitely faster than 330i, not 335i though, but such a sense of drama and presence. Will be a probable replacement eventually, or used 997s. Good posing eh?

Quicker than the Cayman, but not necessarily the Cayman S. Probably about the same, but the Porsche feels really quick 'cos it's so low to the ground and cocoons you in Speeeeeed!

Rockit,glad you enjoyed it

Had a good look at Cayman S before my 335d, loved the look of them for the Pose factor but as soon as i touched the door handle it just felt plasticky and crap need £50k for a tooled up one, which for me was just too much

but saying all this i'd probably be smitten if i had a nice test drive in one

Tried it - fun for a rip but as an everyday car it would rapidly piss you off.

My lasting impression was 'VXR in drag'

Looks good RockIt. I think the centre console looks pretty dull and bare without the full sat nav screen, which I see your car had. Was it really 'full leather' - I understand Porsche also do partial leather, meaning everything you come into contact with is leather, but the rest ain't!

Porsche is a bugger of a company. I too have the Cayman on my future car list, but the 2 year warranty and servicing/running costs just put me off too much! Argh!

Glad you enjoyed it.

Piss you off maybe, but not me. I could easily live with it on a daily basis as long as we kept a second more practical motor. Don't feel the VXR comparison at all. Horses for courses though. It's not to everyone's taste.

Nice write-up RockIt. Good looking car But out of my league due to Mortgage and Nursery fees

Went out in a friends Westfield today and was amazed at the fun to be had for about £5-8K. Seriously tempted, if I can persuade the wifey

Great looking car, so how do you get 'invited' for a test drive?

Leeds Porsche Centre is a JCT franchise, as is my BMW dealership and previously my Mazda. I can only assume that my details were passed on from one branch of JCT to another, although some guys on the RX8 Owner's Club site have had invites, so maybe it's a Mazda thing? Who knows, but it would have been very rude not to have taken up the offer!
