When I gave up years ago I used to smoke when I was on holiday. So I would go abroad for 2 weeks. buy a pack of 200 at duty free. Smoke the whole time I was away and just stop without batting an eyelid when I got on the plane to come home.
Like I said. I just don't have an addictive personality. Pretty lucky that way but still think it's better in every way to just not smoke no matter what. Rich, never realised you were so early into chucking it. Keep it up. The torrent of abuse you will receive for starting this thread if you start again should be motivation enough.

I gave up last April with a bit of assistance, I went on a course of champix, I was a bit sceptical about them, but found them really good. I had given up a few times before through will power, but my mrs smoked alot and she wanted to give up so I gave it a go with her, we both used champix, I've still not smoked, but the mrs is back on them.

I've tried quitting countless times. I've had reasons to quit but they ultimately weren't strong enough to sway me in other directions. CONGRATS on being able to break your cycle!

Well done mate. Packed in 40 ish a day 1st Jan 2007 and best thing I ever did. Experienced weight gain, bit of quite noticeable depression, and had to re-programme my brain! Got into habit of all those trigger cigs, the pint, the phone call, the after meal.
Going to Canada winter 2006 did it for me, their smoking ban kicked in before ours and standing outside in -20 or so made me realise it was ridiculous. Like many have said previous can't trust myself with odd one, haven't had a drag since giving up. My wife is great, every couple of months buys 10 for a night out, then doesn't touch them until the next one, I envy that sort of control! |

This is a drag. Get it. I'll let myself out.
Well done Rich.

Keep going, best thing you can ever do.
I gave up 6 years ago by going on an Allen Carr easyway seminar. 6 hours and £200 and not had a ciggie since. Totally recommend it, but I have become an evangelical sanctimonious prick ![]() |

It's normally along the lines "I did it,so hard can it be",C*nts, the lot of them. Well done Rich ![]() I'm trying, and after what was supposed to be a 24hr stop over after key hole surgery in Dec,turned into a 6 day stay when my lungs collapsed (smoking) it's become a MUST do. SCARY f*cking stuff! Whilst on your health bent Rich,it might be a good idea to have your Prostate checked out. Sanctimonious prick hat on ![]() Whilst P/cancer is not hereditary,it is familial (can run in families). You recently reminded me of a contribution I made to your thread about your Grandfather,so PCa is in your family. A blood test (PSA) takes no time, and can/could save you endless grief, and of course ultimately your life. Contrary to popular belief,Pca is NOT confined to the older (as me ) Guy, and with most Cancer/s is on the increase (allegedly).Keep up the no smoking Rich, but do yourself a favour, and get a blood test (if you've not already). I'd say the same to anybody. I make no apology for this health announcement on behalf of the Hotcoupe health service,it's not meant to frighten, just spur you Guys into action

It was my father and unfortunately he starts radiotherapy in a few days because the surgery didn't catch it all. I am going to get a blood test Mr Hotcoupe. I said I would last time you mentioned it but it was a bit of a 'whenever' response I have to admit. You've spurred me on.
Your near death experience and six day stop in hospital reminded me of a conversation I had with my mum a few days ago. She stopped smoking quite a few years ago but has craved cigarettes ever since. She says a G&T just isn't the same without one. Anyway, I told her about me stopping and this prompted another bit of cigarette nostalgia. Then she just said 'To hell with it. I'm 74. I might start again. It's not going to kill me now is it?' Anyhoo, I'm still off them. |

Surgery was not an option for me,apparently I had a menagerie of hooded bad boy cancerous cells dancing on top of my prostate,so whipping out the walnut was never going to work. Cooking the little feckers was the only way! Anyway,I hope it goes OK for your Dad,if he wants some advice/help/guidance or whatever really,I'd be happy to help, even if it's a friendly chat on the dog/bone Good for you on the blood test, get it done.

Excuse my ignorance. So is prostate cancer detected/tested for with a blood test? I always thought it was via "probe" and I've always feared hearing the phrase "we'll just check your prostate while you're here Mr Mowat" while at the docs.
Everyone on my dads side dies of heart disease and everyone on my mums side dies of being miserable so hopefully I've got nothing to worry about ![]()
