Very intriging post... though I didn't have the patience to read all the pages but I wanted to chime in cuz I am BMW CA for 7 years now.

To sum this up in a nutshell.

You income as a CA or salesperson anywhere is honestly all dependant on the management team and their structure. Some dealers (managers) wants results by volume so they will sell anything at whatever price to say they have the highest sales and bla bla bla. Doing business this way, they will get a decent profit in the long run by BMW paying the dealer their performance shares. This is different then hold back and also on top. But anyways, this system sucks for a CA unless they have an amazing bonus or tier plan.

Other dealers (like mine ) have a lot of pride in what they sell so they will build value in the BMW (as they should) and work the deal correctly to make the clients happy and yet make a good profit.

Going back to the subject. My CA's make on the low end $70K (we dont really hire brand new CA's, we have a rep to hold so experience only) with an average of $100k and few at close to $200k.

Finance mgers making on average $150-$200k
Finance Directors averaging $250k
SM's averaging $280k
GSM averaging $300-$400
GM's averaging $600-700k

Don't Kill Great Threads.

Resurrection of a great thread, and unapologetic about it too. For anyone after me, just know that good things shouldn't die and if it ain't broke, why make a new one?

I'm in love with the idea of trying something new, and it could be this industry. I have the passion, the charisma and the adaptability to do it, but I want to sweep all my corners.

What's the climate these days for a client advisor? It's been 7 years since the earliest CAs commented about this. Would any (old or new to thread) like to reflect on it and also recommend some resources that have helped them along the way?

I have since left selling BMWs. I really miss my job. And my income was steadily raising as well.

Biggest factor is you will need to find a sales team (Coworkers and Manager) that you vibe with. Mine was always against me and it just made going to work suck. I am pretty sure that when I am older and dont need 100% steady income I will go back to selling cars. But for now, I am going to stick to hourly/salary jobs for me and my family.

i know selling cars is a tough business, but i know good salespersons make a decent amount (100k to 250k) depending on dealership. However, i believe the avg. is closer to 60k, just like real estate agents (avg. salary is 14k). The lows don't define the market nor does the high. I know people who has cleaning biz making millions. In whatever you do, if you are the best you will be banking. :-)

Agreed 100%. I think the CA pay is probably pretty close, but I ran the minimum pay he listed for the following number of employees:

5 CA's (70k each)
2 Finance mgers (150k each)
1 Finance Director (250k)

That's nowhere near reality of course, as it doesn't include SA's, mechanics, secretaries, etc., but even just those few folks above is over $2 mil a year in PAYROLL ALONE!!!

If they make $3,000 profit on every car they sell (not likely), that dealership would have to sell 693 cars a year to cover just that handful of employees! That's only 2 cars a day, 7 days a week for an entire year. Not impossible, but again, that's no dealer profit, that does't pay ANYONE else, that doesn't even keep the lights on!

I'm calling complete bullshit right now.

Dubai you'd have to add another zero after all those salaries listed. There's no way sales can make a consistent $70k a year. I've seen their paychecks. They're sad if they sell less than 15 cars a month. Decent if they're over 15 but never enough to cover the hours spent in their lives at work.

man you must be joking. Im in the wireless industry and I'm making that money every year as a sales associate, and im not even close to the top sales associate in my market...busy location (70k). btw i would love to sale bmw, but if it's for the same $70k i will pass. smh thank you

I have some agreements and some disagreements with this thread. When I was a service advisor, I knew that the four (small dealership) Client Advisors in sales were all making $100k plus a year. And this was with selling 50 to 80 cars a month. Its completely possible.

When I transferred to sales I made $40k my first year, which isnt bad for that tiny dealership, especially since sales were down to 20 to 30 cars a month.

I ended up leaving part of the way through the next year, but I was on the way to make around $50k.

The 60+ hours per week, a wife and a baby on the way just weren't for me. But I have to say I miss the cars a lot.

$100k selling cars is pretty good, especially if your selling the make you like. Does commission vary based on the price? or is there one flat rate?
