For those with the PPK...
Does the PPK reduce or eliminate throttle tip-in lag when in normal mode? I think I read this somewhere in the long thread but wasn't sure. Bmw has a 20% sale so it looks like I can get the kit for around 640 before installation. Not bad if you ask me.

With the PPK the throttle is more responsive and fun to drive. Check ebay for the PPK for $450.

Nice review I also have a ppk with my n55... I bought the car with the ppk so I can't say how the difference feels. But I have driven my brothers n55 e92 which is pretty much same exact car as mine and I can feel the difference... Most people will see the price/gain and laugh but it is worth it if you ask me because it delivers the power in such a smooth way. Also not sure if it really puts it in the s4/5 range. But with the warranty thing... What's stopping you from getting an AP and just uninstalling before you take it in to dealer? From what I read around here I think most people get away with Ap... Also question, for updates how would I be able to see if I have the latest update? And what is the benefit of a newer update?

The install price was the same, around $200. Just asked the SA for a quote and hold him to it.

Contacted one local dealer today regarding the PPK. Quote was roughly $950 installed. About 250 was labor, so 700 for the tune. Then I asked if they would honor the labor charge if I found another source for the tune. Answer: no.
I already know I can buy it thru them using a 20% coupon code, which puts it at 640. Plus 250 tune...890. Still not thinking this is worth quite that. I think if I cold get this done for 650-700, I'd probably get it but I'm having a hard time with anything approaching 900-1000. Can independent bmw shops install this tune?

You approached it all wrong. Just buy the "tune" online for $450 (put in quotes because all you are actually buying is a registration code in an envelope) and then show up at your dealer and tell them you need this installed and it should take about an hour. The SA will look a bit confused fro a few moments, perhaps need to talk with the manager but will take your car in and do it. Asking the service desk hypothetical questions just gives them the opportunity to put up roadblocks. Just be matter of fact about the whole thing. You can get the whole thing done for less than $600.

I wonder if the envelope with the registration code also indicates the standard labor hours necessary to install the tune...that could be helpful. What a PITA though. I guess it's their business to decide on what they feel is appropriate for the labor and tune price. And I have a choice not to buy it from them.

My dealer only charged 1 hour labor so I was out the door for under $600. It pays to cultivate those relationships with service writers and mechanics. I bring them coffee and donuts all the time when I stop in. No way they are saying "no" to a loaner car while eating food you just brought. Simple psychology...

Unfortunately the dealer on e-bay who had it for $450 raised the price. Also check with Jason@Tischer, he helped me out before I purchased the PPK1. Awesome customer service.

I think I'm sold!
FWIW Has anyone seen the DINAN dyno test of the PPK on an E90 N55 with Steve Dinan speaking? The NJ CCA chapter did a tour of the port facility in Bayonne yesterday which included a classroom session including a discussion with the new M Performance parts manager from BMW NA and Matt Russell. A new PPK1 will soon be released for the F30 and be compatible for all N55s. The stats are the same as current tune, but the video was more interesting: Dinan discusses the different ways aftermarket products may calculate their HP and torque gains and provided a range of gains based on there dyno test. In their test which was type that bolts directly to the hub, they conservatively estimate the crank output max at 327HP and 355lb. This tune now peaked my interest! It compares favorably with the seat of pants gains comments posted here. According to Matt Russell, the reason the manual has a lower torque rating is due to concerns over the longevity on the flywheel as a manual car has to withstand higher shocks to the drivetrain during shifts. A higher spec flywheel was an option, but would have made the kit too costly. They had a fully decked out F30 335i M-Performance car there too, the one used at Daytona this year. In person this car makes you grin. I have never been into accessorizing and tuning but this makes sense for the guy wants an M3 type experience but needs the practicality and running cost of a 335i to use as a daily driver doing a fair amount of miles a year. Now you have that fully backed by BMW, who will give you 'something' for these upgrades at trade-in time. Additionally, in a couple of years you could buy a CPO M-Sport car and add these items as you go. I like that. I understand the M-Performance philosophy now, its an Alpine-type car. http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=783743

I don't know why e90 N55 owners would need to wait for an F30-based factory tune. The factory power kit is already out there for us with similar power numbers. What am I missing here?
It is too bad for anyone looking to do this now as Paul Miller did indeed just jack up the price in their eBay store by $200! I guess they finally figured out that they were selling it way lower than anyone else. It is a fantastic deal at $650ish installed but once you get into that $800 range other options begin to look more and more tempting (Cobb for example). I enjoy my PPK but I don't think I would do it at the current pricing. |

For F30's it will be part of the drive select mapping, it will be an option on top of Sport+, I thought that was neat.

Seems like everyone here has an automatic transmission. Anyone here have PPK Stage 1 with a 6 speed manual? The torque increase is only half that of the gain for the automatics..guess BMW doesn't want to harm the integrity of the manual trans..THANKS

Anyone here gone to have the PPK installed and you didn't have the oil cooler? How did the dealership handle that?

The M performance kit that just came out is for a F body and includes a new air box. I assume the software is the same as what a E chassis would use, but do you need a airbox that would fit my E93 to get the most benefit?
