Bent 2 new VMR V710's yesterday

I'm so disappointed. Hit a pothole yesterday and apparently bent both right side wheels. The rear tire is losing air and the front wheel is visibly bent. Damn you pothole! I've tried to be as cautious as possible but this one was a lot deeper than it looked.

That's the size I was considering buying. The V710's look nice for the money, but I have been looking at other brands too. Part of me keeps thinking I should buy 18's to have more rubber between the wheel and the road.

How hard did you hit the pothole? Do you think any rim would have bent, or are these fragile?

In my 20 yrs of driving in US and Europe I never bent a wheel on at least 30 different cars. What is going on with so many bent wheels? Are you guys using steering wheel and brakes?? Maybe you need to get your eyes checked. Don't mean to be rude but you need to make some fundamental driving adjustments. I try to avoid every imperfection on the road, ducts, holes, bumps regardless of size. If it is big pothole or bump I slow down to 2 mph to find the best possible way to avoid it or go over it slowly.

Get a motorcycle and learn to ride it. If you ever hit a pothole you're dead, simple as that. That's a way to learn how to avoid potholes:P

You and smooth330i are both correct. I used to own a motorcycle and I have only bent a rim once in my 34 years of driving (pot hole at night at high speed). My questions to badkarma was more directed at wanting to know if the VMR wheels are too fragile. I have spent too much money on cars in my lifetime and paying $1K for a set versus some of the high end wheels is very appealing to me.

VMR wheels are fragile. Gravity cast wheels have a lot of imperfections in the aluminum grain (crystal) borders. That's why they need a heavier design not to collapse under normal driving. Under large stress such as hitting a pothole all these imperfections will be stressed and some connections may be broken if they are located on a weak place. A flow formed (volk, HRE) etc), forged or sinter forged wheel will have a lot lesser imperfections and will therefore be stronger and less likely to break.

Forgestar have have flow formed wheels for about $1500, that's just $450 up from the VMR's and those are a lot stronger than the VMR's... You can also purchase second hand forged wheels for similar money.

While there is some truth what what you are saying, any wheel could bend, whether it is forged or cast. Forged wheels are lighter in weight because manufacturers can stretch/press the metal thinner, thus using less materials. All of our wheels conform with the quality control and testing processes issued by JWL/VIA, and have a load rating of 815KG.

^You deliver a great design for a great price and I'm not doubting that quality is up to standards, but you do offer wheels in a price range where you can't expect them to hold all types of stress a blind driver can inflict on a gravity cast wheel. If you're on a budget VMR's are a great deal, and you can buy 2 or even 3 sets of VMR's for 1 set of quality wheels. However, forged wheels are far better in all aspects except price; weight, quality etc. Any wheel can bend, but a forged one is less likely to. It's all about the crystalization of grains and the bonding between them. Forging improves these bonds.

Just look at Schmidt wheels, those stands up to curb rash and heavy abuse. These wheels wouldn't suffer from pot holes at all:

I don't know what the roads are like where the OP lives but I grew up in western PA and the roads there were often nothing but long strips of hot patch (or worse, cold patch) and potholes. I remember in specific one road near where my parents lived at the time where the only way to avoid the potholes was to use the oncoming traffic lane near the top of a blind hill, so obviously suspension took a beating.

Fortunately the last time I was there ( a few weeks ago) the roads didn't appear nearly as crap as I remembered them from when I learned to drive there. Except for the road my parents live on now, the marcellus shale drillers have completely trashed it and the surrounding roads...

Forged wheel strength is superior, assuming the thickness of the metal will be the same. Less metal = less strength at the end of the day. The crystal structure does play a part in that for sure, but like I said, any wheel could get damaged. Speaking from experience, I've had pretty pricey wheels crack on me.
