6MT drain plug question, confused...
RealOEM lists 23127602815 as the part number for the drain plug for my 08 328i sedan with 6MT. I want to change the fluid and have read that it's a good idea to change the plug at the same time.
I want to order that part, but the Tischer site is saying that the part number is not verified for my vehicle. Ideas? I'd also like to maybe get the GoldPlug magnetic plug for it too but their site doesn't list one. I've seen folks say they have them but no one has listed a size. Also if anyone knows the oem part number of the transmission fluid that'd be cool too. I don't track or anything so I think I'm going to go oem. Thanks!

Also,
I am wavering between OEM and RedLine D6-ATF for the change. I see a lot of info about both out here on these and other boards, again don't track the car, do I need redline?

In your part of the world what does 6MT mean? I'm assuming six (6) forward speed manual-shift transmission (i.e. the car has three (3) pedals, the farthest left one being there to operate the clutch). If that is the case, ATF (automatic transmission fluid) will be the wrong transmission oil for the manual transmission (if that is what is in your car).

My '06 E90 325i manual transmission uses MTF LT-3. Maybe BMW has changed to an ATF for later model years, but to be sure the OP should look on the transmission for the sticker that indicates what lube the trans uses. He's got an '08 328i, which uses the same transmission my car does, Getrag S6-17BG.

BMW went to an ATF for its manual transmissions about 15 years ago to respond to complaints about poor shifting in cold weather. It solved that problem at some expense in lubrication qualities. Most trans rebuilders use a heavier lube, and Mike Miller (BMWCCA and Bimmer mag tech guy) recommends Redline MTL. That's what went into my E39s and it'll go in my E92 at 30K.

The trans takes BMW MTF-LT-3. There is a sticker on the side of the transmission next to the fill plug that will confirm what lube is in the transmission. Whether you want to go with OEM lube or ATF lube that the ATF lube manufacturer says crosses over to BMW's MTF-LT-3 spec, then that is your choice. The BMW P/N is: Trans Oil in 5L container 83 22 7 533 818

I've used both in my E39 5MT, and Amsoil MTF is in my E90 6MT right now. |
