DashCam Near Miss

I went down a narrow rual lane today, just to see how the winter tyres handled. Not really a good decision because I did not account for other peeps not driving sensibly.

An Astra coming the other way locked his wheels as soon as he saw me and could not stop. If my winters had not allowed me to drive up onto the verge we would have collided head on.

I was going uphill and he was downhill, so that's partly why he could not stop very easily, but he clearly just could not stop in time.

Lucky escape, but I'm not sure how conclusive the video would be in showing that a collision would have been his fault.

If I had actually stopped he would have just hit me. Since I kept a small amount of forward momentum going that's partly what gave the car the impetus to take to the verge on the left.

Your lucky there!!

I was going to put my Yoko W Drive winters back on lastnight but I didn't get chance.

Went to B'ham today, much more snow than in Oxfordshire!! I'm on new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric 2's, very good actually I have to say, in the snow too, to a point but after having had winters on the last 6 cars out of my 9 in total I'll never go back!!!

Where abouts was that video shot?

To be fair it looks as if the Astra driver was hogging the absolute inside line and very near the verge himself.

You looked to be more in the middle of the road and he was steering to avoid you.

Also you never managed to stop before the impact would have taken place either.

Have to agree with the above and in fact it appears like he was prepared to steer completely off the road to avoid the impact. Whereas from the camera angle we are seeing it from it looks like you a slightly more towards the middle of the road and then begin to steer out.

I'm sorry, but I'm tending to agree with the comments posted. I can't help think you were going a bit too quick and if you had come together would have struggled to claim your innocence if the video was viewed by either insurance party.

TBH I agree with all the comments of how it looks on the replay.

From my point of view (whether or not the insurance company would agree with this, or whether anyone would accept my stance on the basis of this video) these are the facts:

1) He could not stop in time before he would have hit me. He did pull over as far as he could, but he was never going to be able to stop in time.

2) Whilst I did not stop I could have done so easily. However I could see that if I just stopped then there was no room for him to get alongside me and he would have hit me. If I had stopped I would have had difficulty getting moving again because I was going uphill. By keeping some momentum going I was able to get up onto the verge on the left in order to give him the room he needed to get alongside.

3) It does look like I am not as far over to the LHS of the road as I could have been. However the snow hides the fact that I was as far over to the left as possible without mounting the verge underneath the snow.

I do agree that the video would not have been sufficient to prove who was in the wrong.

Rgearding the comment that this did not constitute much of a "near miss" it wasn't from a severity point of view, but was from a proximity point of view. There was barely three inches of clearance between the cars when he came to rest.

I was actually going really slowly. The wide angle nature of the camera conveys an impression of greater speed that is actually the case. This might be an argument for going with a more sophisticated camera that shows speed on the display.

I think I would have hidden that video had there been a smash as it would not have done you any good. A camera that records speed would be good as it does appear you were going much too fast for the conditions and were too far across the road.

At least all ended well!!

It looks like a single track road, even in good conditions both parties would need to slow and allow each other to pass IMO

I think you were travelling a bit too quick for the conditions too
