Really annoyed at CPO

Purchased an 09 E93 last summer, car has CPO, with 43,000 miles currently.

Car shifting eratic when cold:
CPO covers mechanical failure of transmission but does not cover software update.

A/C not blowing cold:
Stealer wants $200 up front to diagnose, basically recharge with refrigerant and see if they can find a leak... again, not covered in CPO.

Comfort access sensitivity sucks:
OK, this is a known problem, but again, diagnosis is not covered under CPO, so there is a $65 up front charge. If they find a problem with the system, (Mechanical failure only) they will cover it. If it needs re-programed, or they don't find anything, that is not covered and I loose my $65.

Convertible top rattle above right rear window:
Car has been to dealer before for this, the last time they said the weatherstrip needed lubricated, which they did, but it continued to rattle when I drove it off the lot. I paid nothing out of pocket last year, but this year they told me CPO does not cover top rattles.

Recall capaign for battery cable:
This of course is covered.

Does this even sound reasonable? Remind me why I paid out the *** for a CPO car?

Now I'm seriously wondering if I should just buy a non CPO car and buy warranty separately because CPO doesn't cover a lot of things.

That alone has probably repaid the premium for CPO. The other items are not covered, and it is annoying, except for AC which is normal wear and tear.

He didn't get it fixed. So it didn't cover the premium.

The other stuff is what the dealership used to try and sell me the extended maintenance. They basically claimed that if I bought extended maintenance, all the things you are claiming not to be covered under CPO would then be covered.

I'm not convinced that would have been the case anyway, but I always thought the CPO was only for major mechanical things like drivetrain, etc.

Yea, the trans didn't fail... it just shifts eratically when cold. To be honest it probably needs a fluid flush which I am going to do. It's very annoying that software updates for drivetrain are not covered.

It is common for them to say we diagnose, and if something is found, we will repair it at no cost. YOu shouldnt be paying them upfront, but if nothing is found, then expect to pay that!! There is a long thread on my exerience with oil leaks... ..

Good luck man, hopefully it works out..

If its 43k miles its not even in the CPO period yet. Also I had an AC evaporator and rear tail light fixed under CPO at my dealership. All I had to pay was the 50 dollar deductible, I'd try another dealer or call BMW corporate number, they're actually quite helpful.

CPO is worth it. My transfer case went last summer. That alone paid for the CPO premium plus some. Would of cost me over $5K for parts and labor.

It is not normal it needs fluid change or what else. Even if it is software issue, the trans should shift normal at this mileage. So don't request they update the soft (cost $$$) demand they fix the trans. If they don't want to do it, bring the car to another dealership, CPO should be no problem on a trans problem. It is -not- tear and wear.

CPO is not worth it if you let the dealer talk you out of warrantied repairs. It is worth it otherwise. My experience with CPO has been great, repairs performed with little to no questions, and BMW NA was never the problem person in the room, so if your experience differ, try another dealer.

Ya you never pay upfront at least at my dealer. You give them the car agreeing to diagnose fee and then the rest needs to be approved via phone call.

He is out of the 4 year period. He could have 4,000 miles but new car warrant will still be up after 4 years.

I have a 09 e93 that I purchased last February as a CPO. It had 43k miles and now has 60k. Knock on wood, no real issues to date. The only item I had was some hesitation at highway speeds, which was caused by carbon build up. Dealer got BWMNA to cover the cleaning. Normal maintenance otherwise.

I would be very frustrated if they treated me the way you are. BMW has not required a diagnostic charge...yet. But our Toyota dealer has. But they only charge that fee IF they find something AND its not covered by warranty. But they will apply it to the repair if they perform the work. It's basically their way of protecting themselves from people coming in for diagnostics and taking the car elsewhere for repair.

Good luck.

I've never owned a CPO but I have had issues with my cold air. It is common with many autos. The last dealer said they "could not duplicate customer concerns". They confirmed no pressure drop so they stopped the investigation...Dumb asses. I asked the SA to get into my car when its 80F and he refused. I've since dropped that dealer and will have my current dealer investigate in the summer.

Not sure this is what you describe Ken, but setting the rear vent to "hot" is known to cause disconfort from heat on the center console, and feel like the trans is overheating. It is not, it is just poor design for the rear vent. Harmless but annoying, just set the rear vent on cold position and it stops.

I purchased a 2010 328i coupe with 35k miles clean car fax and drives great...however I found on the front grill some black paint..as if paint was tested there. I flicked it off with my finger.

Also the fog lights did not work and the dealer told me they were not wired correctly..would all these mean the car was wrecked before I purchased it??

I noticed problems with several bmw deals here in SF,ca.
I have a CPO but they want several hundred dollars just to diagnose simple problems like sticky brakes when cold which cannot be reproduced at the dealer.
BMW service has really gone down hill in my opinion.
Luckily there are a few great independent certified servicers that can fill the gap.
I don't see an advantage to buying from a bmw dealer anymore.
