Driving cross country in 2007 335i

I'm moving to California in a couple months and will be making the move in an 07 335i coupe with nearly 80k miles. I'm not transporting anything heavy with me on the trip, but I'm wondering if anyone has any insights on racking up that many miles in a short span of time with light modifications (for me, DCIs and JB+).

I'm planning on getting a pre-road trip tune-up, but does anyone who's driven across the country with mods have any advice on things to look out for?

Look out for pot holes… Other then that it's not a big deal, if you're not overheating in traffic you'll be fine on the trip.

I've driven a few different vehicles around the country and never had an issue, with proper pre-travel fluid level checking.

Just drive up to Ohio and drop it off to me, and I'll let you have my 328 so you don't have to worry about turbos going out on the trip

Driving across country is no different than driving across town; it just takes longer. If your car has an issue that will possibly let it fail you driving across country, then that same issue will show up just driving around your home town. What tune up would you do? Plugs at 45K? (90K?) Air filter? Oil change? Brakes? I could see an oil change early if the car will go past the OCI enroute, but other than that, go for it. The CBS will tell you the status of all the maintenance items, so if none are going to come due during the trip then you are good to go.

Enjoy the ride! I drove across Western US a couple years ago and had a blast! Get some kind of mobilty kit in case you get a flat in the middle of nowhere

Probably the only thing that would cause a headache is if the water pump died on you. Otherwise, there are not any obvious things that could go wrong.

Assuming you will be on the highway most of the way, they are about the easiest kind of miles you car would see.

+1, a mobility kit and probably a tire plug kit could be a good combo... and maybe a travel/scissor jack (we don't have one, right?).

Awesome, thanks guys. Yeah we don't get a jack. I might go for the next set of spark plugs before the trip - we'll see.

Upgrade your inter-cooler would help... bring a couple of bottle of oil and also coolant... other than that you should be alright... also if you still have your RF tires... this is the time that it is going to be useful... plan your stopovers where BMW dealers are located... also get a GoPro Hero 3 cam... also radar scanner, since you have a tune...

Good points, thanks. I've got a Passport ix, which has been a lifesaver on many, many occasions.

Make sure you check out which states you'll be safe with a radar, in some states they are illegal!! Don't want to get pulled over by that too

Probably not an issue as, unlike you guys in the Great White North, only VA and DC outlaw detectors in the US.

That's right - so head west, not north and you'll be fine.

Didn't want to scare you, but you might want to google that up. Last I checked I think there are more then just two States... Good luck!
