I figure if I get the midrange in good shape just using the onboard Hi/Lo filters of the XD600/6 I can add a subwoofer later and perhaps an EQ. In my past experience getting the deep bass was difficult and needed eq. I want to avoid having to put another electronic component in unless necessary. The advantage of the HiFi system is the full range, unEQ'd balanced differential signal delivered to the trunk mounted amp.

That said, I am a bit concerned in my simple system about bandpassing the underseat woofers. The XD600/6 seems to allow either Hi or Lo pass on a channel pair, but not both like a proper EQ would. My guess is that I will need to hi pass the 4 inch BSW's at 150-200. I can use the lo pass on the woofers to blend, but then have the concern that the woofers will not do a good job of mid bass if they are trying to push 35 HZ. I seem to remember that a tight, acoustic suspension enclosure creates a smooth sloped mechanical filter. That might work.

So what about installing a set of 5 inchers in the doors, to bridge a little bit of that gap? The price difference is not significant between 4" and 5" and I have a feeling 5" will work in the front doors of an E90.

The best combo for you to take care of that 30Hz (or even below) to 150Hz band of sub and mid bass band without any DSP or EQ is to get both a dedicated sub and a mid bass and let the 4" do the rest.

Otherwise you will need tuning tricks to try to move that band to a point of compromise. The XD amp does not have the necessary tuning selections to eliminate the compromise, it will be filter frequency and gains and nothing else.

Either the SSMB8 or the ADMW9 will do as mid bass -from 50/60Hz to 200Hz and a trunk sub can take care of the 20Hz to 60/80Hz. IMO, VP Electricity trunk sub for the E90 and an ID10 will be more than fine filling that sub band.

Anybody looked into Infinity Basslink? I've used it in two cars and like the result.

ADC,

If my planned BSW/Morels install doesn't work, changing to 5 inchers would, I guess, be an option. I'm kind of interested in doing this all for $1500. The Morels are probably "better" than the BSWs, but they preserve an "all Morel" option in the future and also, I believe, provide the best tradeoff between what I am looking for in these underseat woofers (I am careful not to call them subs).

BTW, what lousy weather in our neighborhood! Still would like to get to Eastern shore.

i have the 5.25" woofers from the MB Quart RUA213 setup installed in the doors
and i have them high passed at 60hz (12db filter) and i have my SWS-8i low passed at 60hz (24db filter) and my handoff from the MBQ to the SWS8 sounds great
when i listen to any song now
the bass feels like its coming out of the doors, seamless

with my earlier setup, i was using the logic 7 4" in the doors
i had to cross them over at 90-100hz (any lower and they distort) and my sws-8 were low passed at 60hz (any higher and they sound too boomy)
i could feel the bass coming from under the chair, it didn't sound like it was coming from the doors.

now my only problem is the magnets on the 5.25" speakers rub against the door window frame.
they don't rub if i pull the door trim away from the door with my hand
and they rub much worse when i tighten the screws that hold the door trim in place
so next project is fitting some metal washers on those screws to give me a little extra clearance
i believe the max depth on the E92 is 40mm, the MB's are 42mm
so if it's just 2mm diff, i think a washer should cure that.

i'm hoping the MS-8 i got today can help me tame the harshness that i'm guessing is between 3-5khz on the MBs

well if the 5.25" are only 2mm too big for the E92
they should be no problem on the E90

you E90 people are so spoilt!!

Yeah, spoilt - but wait, I want to install the Rainbow SLC 230.25 NG, not the MB Quarts (I think those are a little too bright).

The Rainbows I currently have (SLC 210.25 NG) are 48mm mounting depth, but the 230's are 58mm! I wonder if they'll fit...

I'm thinking if I stay with Rainbows I would only need to install the mid, keeping the tweet and crossovers where they are - and this in turn would free the current 4" Rainbows to be installed in the rear deck (or sold).

kmarei,

Excellent info on your earlier results with the sws8i woofers. I think this reinforces my decision to go with the Morels and hope they can go higher. If they don't, I guess I can start cutting for 5's.

you are welcome to try the SWS-8i in my car
you can play with the low pass crossover as much as you want
it's easy to put it back where it is now cuz its set to the lowest setting on the knob, 60hz
i live in reston, va about 5 min from dulles airport

why would you want the underseat driver to play higher?
why not get the door speaker to play lower?
i can't see midbass coming from underneath you being a good thing

well i'm hoping bright can be fixed with EQ
low frequency extension or mounthing depth can't be fixed
i believe the max depth on the E90 is 50mm
so you're almost a cm too much
we need to meet and compare notes

Unlike some cars with an arm rest that may open to the trunk, my model has absolutely no connection between cabin and trunk. Would a trunk sub help? I know some say that the low frequencies will find their thumping way into the cabin, but what do you guys think? Any answer on the infinity basslink question? BSW's trunk sub is cool because of the hide away fibreglass enclosure. I wish I could just purchase that casing and put in my own sub and amp here. VP any link or pics of your trunk subs? But I guess that still won't solve the small problem of the hole in the mids right?

If you decide to sell your car, just replug the oem amp and keep the new amp! To be honest, the harness was expensive for me but Technic has done a good job on it and you don't have much choice anyway, especially if you're not very technically inclined. Plus he gives you free advice too. Since its not mass produced, I think it's just not worth his time if it were cheaper.
Just wanted to update.
Got the harness, ordered the JL XD600/6

BSW......Sorry, I'm tired of waiting for your silly amp!

There's no need to "rewire" anything, I don't even know what that means in this context. You either get a 2 ohms stable amp to drive those 2 ohms speakers or you don't. And right now I would say that 100% of aftermarket amplifiers that really are worth something are 2 ohms stable.

For example, the two multichannel amps in my post above are 2 ohms stable. However, depending on which amp you choose is the wiring configuration:

PDX-5 = OEM components (2 ohms) driven by channels 1-4 directly and a pair of SWS-8 in 4 ohms wired in parallel driven by channel 5 (mono).

G6600 = OEM components (2 ohms) driven by channels 1-4 respectively and a pair of SWS-8 in 2 ohms driven by channel 5-6 respectively (stereo).

FYI: I'm in the final development and production of a custom harness to allow direct plug in interface with the main OEM amp connector in the trunk, so the OEM amp can be fully replaced while no OEM cables will have to be cut to add any aftermarket amp or processor to the OEM HiFi (non-Logic7) system. It will include a relay with fuse protection for the OEM remote turn on signal. It should be for sale in around 6 weeks for current 3- and 1-Series and the E46; this will greatly simplify the installation and thus considerably reduce the installation costs.
I know I probably totally necro'd this thread, but Technic, are the plug and play adapters you were creating years back available for the e46 M3 'Vert? If so, I'd like to discuss some options for a sound system in my car with you. check you PM

great source of information here on these forums

Install Questions

Technic, I am interested in the wiring harness you mentioned in your post of several months ago for the e90 with HiFi (base stereo) system. Is that available now?

+1.

Although I have e92. Not sure if that matters.
