Trans issue..xi/6mt

Greetings! So I will also post this in AWD talk but maybe someone local could help me out here. I had my wheels changed over from a winter to summer set. The winters were 19 by 8.5/10 the only diff with the summers are the rear width is 10.5. The tire sizes have went from 235/275 to 235/265. The real issues started as soon as I drove home from the shop who changed them out for me. It felts as if the transmission was completely slipping out of gear and jolting on acceleration. This happens throughout the pegs. It's apparent it's either something with a mount to me however the shop I took it to after informed me the transmission software needs to be reprogrammed and "it is throwing off your gear ratios because you went with wider wheels which are staggered on an AWD car". Personally I don't know the validity of this statement and am hoping somewhere here could offer some advice or insight, thanks! Rev

what's the profile percentage on those tires, e.g. 235/??/19, 265/??/19, etc.? that will influence your rolling diameter and deviation between the tires. hopefully these tire calculators can help you out.

hmm thats weird...i swap out my winter (non-staggered) to summer (staggered) for the past 5 years without any issues. Did you try resetting the transmission and transfer case with a BT Tool?

Swap the other wheels again and see if you get the same problem...

Oh ya its DEF noticeable, almost like the trannys ready to drop out under accleration. I guess ill get some new tires then I'll try changing out the tire in the rear to a 275..the sidwalls are both 30 on both the 265 and 275 rears and 35 on the 235. Never had this issue before! Rolling diameters should be within range with both setups. Perplexing. I do have the bt, under what tab would that be? Trans management doesn't seem to recognize when I tried to send some reset adaptations commands. Hmm let's see...

I had same issue. Stick to 275 rears as the rolling diameter is at closest it can be. Solved my issue.

When you change gears, it feels like car holds back and kinda struggles. Once I changed rears, no issues

Well apparently the guys in awd section think its because my tire is stretched. its265 conti dws/10.5 width wheel . I wonder if that's it..they do run wide and they are def not stretched on visual inspection. But at this point do I try to go wider all around or just throw some 275s on the rear..crap awd will be the death of me. 275 squared?

Well you can go down to 225/35 up front, or change to a 275 rear. I am probably going to change to a 275 rear also. The odd thing is, this problem was never mentioned till recently, and there is no way we are the only 2 running the 235/265 combo in a 6mt xi.

Was it really necessary to reset the transmission and transfer case? I am considering purchasing a BT Tool but i'm not sure if it'll fix my problem as well.

Put on the 275s in the rear, they are on a 19x10 wheel. Magically everything was fine. Now my conundrum is the new wheels out back are 10.5. Now I could go to a 275 but wouldn't it still be a bit stretched and cause another disruption in the rolling diameter? I know this is tire dependent (I run conti dws). Or could I go 245/35/19 f 285/30/10?.

Well here's an update. BMW replaced the transfer case saying it fixed the problem. Well sort of, it did. Not ad major now but something is still up.. And now I have a rattle at start up and the car feels dead now...oh man I think the wg issue is about to hit me full on. Damn.

your preference. 285 might really rub if your dropped.
