A nice person will tell you about those things when you buy the car, and it is courtesy to do so. They don't have to though, and unfortunately you have no recourse if they don't.

As-is buys are best done with a mirror and flashlight.

If you purchased 'as-is no warranty' you have no recourse. Valve cover gaskets are common failure around 70-80k miles. Will run you $1300 at the dealer, $700 indy or $100~ DIY.

You an always ask for a gesture from a dealership. I know most main street dealers are pretty helpful, if they don't have to shovel too much money on you (like doing the work for free in-house, or labor free). If you bought from private, forget it.

Your problem for buying a car without a thorough inspection or without a warranty.

As a manager at a dealership. As-Is is exactly that. Sometimes we go out of the way to help a customer like say a bulb, wiper, battery. There is a reason its being sold as is most of the time. Remember a 30 day warranty still costs the dealer, and who picks up the price? You do.

If its the upper gasket its the labor that kills you.

I think he/she meant, the contract/purchase didn't say "as-is" anywhere. Is there an implied/required warranty by law if there is no "as-is" on the paperwork. I'm afraid I'm on the other side of the country, so I don't know laws there. (I don't know California's stance on that either though...)

OP, work on your writing a little bit...
