Friendly torque spec reminder - top hats 13mm bolt

Don't forget to torque your top struts 13mm bolts to 26lbs instead of 42lbs. You will notice a huge difference in noise (clicking when turning wheel) and drivability (sloppy in the front end vs stiffer and responsive...

Don't ask how I would know....

FML.

(wasted a few hours checking everything besides this until the end...)

I thought it was 47lbs? What made you come up with 26lbs?

Front strut mount clearly says 47lbs in video? Which bolt are you referring too?

That looks like one of outside bolts that attach the perch to the body. 25 ft lb is correct for those. The middle bolt that attaches the strut to the perch is 47 ft-lb.

Correct, those are the ones I was referring too. I have had a noise in my front end for awhile from those being over torqued. It was like a binding noise almost when I would turn the wheel at slow speed. I have googled this concern and a lot of people were replacing end links. I doubled checked my connections (since I just installed coilovers) and I had over torqued these. After adjusting the noise has gone away completely!

You are really lucky that you didn't snap one if you overtorqued those to 47. That is a rather common occurance on all cars with this suspension design.

So the strut bolts , the 3 that attach to the frame were over torqued causing binding and bad steering response?

well that makes sense now I thought you were referring to the main bolt.

Interesting because I have been searching for the problem. I have a 2012 328i that I had new coil overs put on back in June and they are making the same noises you are talking about that started about 2 months ago perhaps?? My question is why would over torquing the top bolts cause this? I took it back to the shop and they contacted H&R and H&R thought it could be a bad top hat or I am running the fronts too low than what the coil overs are designed for which really stunned me. If you make a product that is adjustable then why would you allow it to be adjusted below what it is capable of was my thought. Forwarded this on to my shop and going to bring it in, but curious to know why this would happen by over tightening the bolts?? Hope this is it because I was kind of bummed hearing the noise and thinking WTF spent all this money to have a clinging noise...

Yes i know I dont have a E9x series..LOL...Still would appreciate some help :-)

I def overtorqued one or two of these lol one nut is tight on the bolt but together they're loose so the whole thing needs to come apart I guess.
I'm getting really sketchy steering when the front wheels unload then load again, its like each wheel wants to go in a different direction. This is the cause isn't it?

This is crazy, thank you OP. Been chasing down front end binding noise and rough ride for a while. Torqued the bolts to proper spec and it feels like a new car with zero noise.

Why the heck would these three bolts be able to cause a rough ride? My front end felt like it was "hopping" all the time.

I just bought another e92 335is as a daily since my Cayman is strictly a track car now. I'm about to do my suspension next week. Good thing someone replied to this and reminded me!
