That's actually a good question. That part of the engine on my '06 is clean as a whistle. There's definitely some oil spray going on, but I wouldn't be able to say from where.

Yes, it's a serious question. I know it's where the oil filter is. But there's no sign of oil leaking from the TOP as if somebody spilled oil during an oil change. It's darker on the bottom and fades as it goes up like it's coming from my head.

What would an owner's manual tell you about black residue on your motor? I build Honda race motors. Definitely not new to cars. My question was if anybody else notices this on their motor?

Might of been a previous oil filter housing gasket leak? Maybe some oil has spilled during an oil change when you were removing the old filter? could be a few things.

By looking at your pic, you can see how the top near the filter cap is light and then gets dark, as a fellow engine builder (as you stated) you can see that as the oil drips down, the farther down the oil builds up, then the darker the burn will be from the heat. If your gasket is good then it would be from carelessness during filter changes. Oil would not spray up or leak from any where else and cause that kind of oil formation (light up top with becoming darker as it goes down).

Oil filter housing gasket for sure. It seeps slowly then your radiator fan blows it around. Very common on several BMW engines.

My 06 325I was recently diagnosed with this oil filter housing gasket leak. 62k miles. Sorry, but it just doesn't bother me nor does it affect the speed and agility of the car. So long as it's a minor leak, it can keep leaking.

It takes an hour to change and the gasket is $10. Change it. 8mm ratcheting wrench from gear wrench is a must.

Not with the small ratcheting wrench. First remove the air duct at the top front of the engine compartment. A ratchet with etorx or 12 pt 8mm socket will work on the lower bolt. Be prepared to catch coolant and oil. Suggest doing job when the car is cold.

You should change it. Oil getting on the belt will cause it to degrade. When it breaks, debris can get caught inside the crank bearing. I have seen one engine sieze because of this. It's a remote chance but it does happen. OFHG is cheap so no resason not to change it.

I've changed my oil a few times now, and have noticed this every time at around 10k miles. The rubber ring gets wore out around this time, at least on my car. I guess they just aren't made to last that long. Of course, you could change it out between oil changes if you wanted.

How about you clean it up and see if the problem comes back? I'm assuming that maybe you didn't notice it before and did now? Wishful thinking so hopefully you dont have to do anything haha

Valve cover gasket is a common problem on our cars. If you have patience, it should be cake especially for someone with your background.


What did it end up being?

Had that stain on my ride. A change of the oil filter housing gasket cleared that up.

My question is
do we need to drain the oil or coolant in order to replace the gasket?
