Well another thing is whether or not the gap is actually smaller or whether it looks smaller. Running more aggressive offsets and wider wheel/tire combinations means that the edge of the tire is more inline with the edge of the fender which can drastically change how the gap looks. This is probably the real cause of the misconception. I bet that the majority of people never actually get out a measuring device and measure. If they did they would be disappointed.

I'd say lower it. I just got my 19's put on and to me it looked funky, but now that I've lowered it, it's all better now!
