Not sure, then how my engine has gotten to 217,000 miles so far with 17,500 OCIs. It'd be nice for an automotive shop, whose business is to perform maintenance services, and says there is a TSB out by BMW regarding dirty oil and cam ledges, to reference or post such a TSB.

On my e46 15,000 mile oil changes (Car died at 190,000 miles).

This one 10,000 miles; should last 500,000 miles

If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

Pretty rich of this shop to make such a statement without providing the TSB.

Would not be surprised if the TSB in question was for model which predates the E46.

What was the cause of the E46 dying at 190,000? Was it engine and engine oil related?

Gave the car to my brother-in-law as a gift. The engine was knocking hard and smelled of gasoline. I know he didnt take care of it so I didn't bother with it.

I'm in Euro-land, home of the $300.00 oil change.

Nevertheless, I still cut the factory OCI in half: I change every 6 months or 9-10K miles.

A few fun facts:
*Oil changes are not free in Europe (even when you buy new from BMW).
*Dealers here think you are crazy when you change more often then the key suggests (even though it is a revenue-generating service!)
*Oil is 27 per quart (for any good synthetic, like Castrol Edge 0W30 LL04)

At my last oil change, I told the dealer to use 0W30. He said, "your car is getting older, I suggest the 5W30 to help prevent oil consumption".

My response was, "my car does not consume oil.".
