Does Touch up paint work?

I have a scratch on my drivers side door, its not huge but its definitely noticeable, i was thinking about getting some touchup paint to fix it but i don't want it to come out like crap, does the touch up paint actually work? and if so how easy is it to apply right and which brand is the best? (my car is jet black)

Just buy the touch up paint from the dealer.. Cost like 27$ I had a chip on my side skirt tiny chip, used the touch up and you can't even see the chip anymore I have to really go on the floor and look at my side skirt to actually see it.

If you buy directly from BMW, and either know how to do it yourself (well) or have a good body shop, then it's pretty much flawless.

If you can't feel it with your fingernail- it might not have penetrated the clearcoat. Why not try some Meguiar's scratch X first?

+1....

touch-up paint is what it is. I had a professional touch up after a dump truck sprayed me, thinking it would make a difference. They guy took almost 2 hours to cover 7 chips. I could have done the same in 10 min. It's still noticeable, but better than exposed.

If you just apply to touch up paint to the scratch, you will still see it, especially if it is a deep scratch that pierced the clearcoat. Still, it is not a problem. You would need to get some 3000 gril sand paper to wet sand the spot then apply the touch up paint, let it dry, wet sand again, and then apply a clearcoat, then polish the car. Good as new. I have never done it on a car but have done it my motorcycle, after a drop in the garage.

I have never been able to use touch up pain well. It always looks worse after I'm done with it.

Next time I need to do it, I am going to try Dr. Colorchip. I recall that being highly recommended before. Anyone?

I would recommend Dr. Colorchip over the touch up paint from the dealer.

Dr color chip does work well...if it is a deep (down to the metal) rock chip, be patient. You may have to do it several times to build the layers to reach the right depth. Then put a little clear on it...buff it out and should be good to go.

Rip a paper match in half and use the frayed end to apply the paint. I've found it works better than the brush. For the most part touch up paint is just slightly better than not doing anything IMHO. I mainly use it to prevent the scratch/chip from getting bigger

Repairing Paint Chips On A BMW Or MINI Video

Search YouTube for Repairing Paint Chips On A BMW Or MINI. There is a helpful video explaining the process using Dr. ColorChip and factory touch-up paint. youtu.be/SKeQGknDn_w

I don't know... Since when is their a "scratch" that can't be felt by a fingernail? I must be like superman with my senses or my fingernails are super. Ive never had luck with the scratch removal products. I say just buy the touchup paint cause your going to need it again eventually.

Trust me, not all scratches can be felt with your fingernail (IE hairline scratches).
I had one such scratch on my rear quarter panel, about 4 inches long.
Meguiar's ScratchX Removed it- true story!

I just got an idea for a future meet up in NJ, we need to do a detailers get together and make all our cars look like new again. I helped out one guy clay bar and compound out some stains from his hood yesterday at the meetup

We have endless car projects to do and teach

A scratch that can be felt with a fingernail (yes I can feel that) can be wet sanded out as long as it is in just the clear coat. A scratch that is only on top of the surface can be buffed out (insert favorite product here).

To me a scratch is different than a rock chip.....rock chip use touchup paint, shallow scratch wet sand it out if you can't buff it out. I would try buffing it out first....then wet sand or find someone that can wet sand.

I wet sanded 2 scratches out yesterday...I posted pics in the detail section on the forum.

I agree, get the touchup (dr color chip), you will need it for something...
