Help! Weird overheating issues!

Hello I have a 2006 325i E90 with 121.000 miles this last Sunday i went on a trip from LA to SF about 150 miles into the trip the amber then the red overheating light came on, the temp had risen from 96-98 C to 128 C. I stopped and turned off the car then in a few minutes i took off again and the amber low coolant light came on. I was able to drive another 100 miles slowly but every time i would begin to go uphill the car would overheat.

On the way back the problem was worse i was only able to drive 30 miles at a time and the car would overheat. I would stop wait for it to cool down and add coolant again and drive for another 30 miles only for the same thing to happen. The outside temp was 106 F. Once i entered the city again the car did not overheat for the rest of the 100 miles as the outside temp had dropped.

After turning the car off and back on after overheating i could hear the water pump making some noises and the car jerking a little. I also found it odd that i was loosing coolant but i can't find a leak. A couple of months ago i got a code for the thermostat and replaced it. Is my water pump the problem? And why does it only fail on long trips. It has happened before but only when traveling far.

Thank You

Sorry to say this, but YES your water pump is gone! Freaks me out to hear this stories as I am at 107k miles and also last year I got SES light and error code I read was faulty thermostat supposedly. I guess my thermostat is now stucked open. I did not replace it as it does not causes any troubles, the only this is that engine may take longer to get to normal temps.

Start shopping around for water pump. Ive seen them around $350.00. Keep us posted.

Most affordable place to get a new water pump. Hit ECS up. They will take care of you...

Pierburg is the company BMW uses to manufacture their pumps. If the op pulls his pump out he'll see it's stamped BMW with pierburg markings right on it

Does everyone know why coolant is lost? Because at one paint a lot of coolant was missing. Is the faulty pump leaking? Or do i really have a leak?

If you can't visually see a leak it is best to pressure test the system to know for sure, however, it is normal to experience a loss of coolant while overheating
