Just finished this up. The pictures do not do justice to just how cramped the space really is. It's totally doable but you can't brute force anything... It's definitely a "finesse" DIY.

My tip... I removed the radiator fan and had a much easier time removing the thermostat and removing that top bolt off the water pump. I would highly recommend doing this as it takes all of 10-15 min to take out the radiator fan and those few inches of space go a long way.

Also... If you are struggling getting the power harness back onto the water pump, make sure the hose clamp on the neighboring hose is not in the way... That one took way too long to figure out.

My e90's sitting in my garage right now with errors 2e81 and 2e82 which it said was electric coolant pump. Anybody have a link I can buy a new oem one. I've found a few around $450 shipped but if I can get it cheaper it'll be great. Cheers guys

Came with the wrong bolts though. Make sure to buy Qty 3 of these from your local BMW dealer: Part # 11 51 7 602 123

Bought a thermostat, coolant, and water pump for $520 shipped. Came in 2 days.

I'm thinking maybe we could try to read normal waterpump speeds vs slower speeds when it is failing that way we know to just get rid of it without it leaving us stranded on the side of the road.

They have the waterpump, bolts, and thermo stat for $425 shipped with the July 4th promo coupon. I think it's fireworks4 or something. Check the vendor section for the codes.

Thanks guys. Checked around prices since it was out of my diy reach to get her back and running dealer wanted $1700 here in the nw, and Indies averaged around $1200. Gotta bite the bullet.

Has anyone else had a problem with broken wires to the connector for the thermostat? I went to replace my water pump and thermostat today and found this:




Has anyone replaced this wiring harness? It includes the water pump connection, a ground, and runs up beneath the valve cover. I can't seem to find it on Ticher's fiche's and it was 4:30pm today when I found it so, of course, my local dealership parts department was already closed. Can anyone give me some guidance on where to look for a new harness?

You could try calling/emailing Bavarian Autosport (New Hampshire) Free shipping to 48 states over $150.00. Or... is there any way you can get close enough to solder the wire back together then coat with plastidip wire insulation? All the best.

Added: What you could do is severe the entire thermostat part of the harness maybe a couple of inches above the connector, take it indoors under better access and lighting conditions and try soldering a piece of repair wire to the connector. Then solder the cut harness leads back together. The only thing now is to be careful that you have enough slack in the harness to connect to the thermostat. Just a thought.

Looks like that is what I am going to have to do. Talked to the parts department today and apparently the reason I can't find the harness on any microfiche's is because it's a part of the main engine harness and doesn't separate. More superb german engineering...

The dealership does sell a new connector with a length of wire. I ordered one and will solder it onto the old harness which will give me a little more length so it's not quite as hard an angle going into the plug on the thermostat and hopefully will prevent this from happening again. 2-3 business day lead time on the part.

Just wondering if anyone has changed their water pump or thermostat before it went bad? I'm at 154k km and it hasn't been changed yet. I know on my previous car it was a maintenance item where you change it every 100-120k kms but I'm not sure about the water pump.

IMO, your water pump and thermostat are living on borrowing time. I would change them out ASAP. Also, you might want to post your question under a new thread if you need more opinions.

YES -- I am currently in the middle of this and have found the connector wire to be worn but not broke -- only a few wire strands showing. Working on an 07 335i MT. I did remove the intercooler and radiator fan -- the third WP bolt will be a breeze. The clip hose connectors are the real pain. Plan on completing the job tomorrow morning. This has been a big help!

Thank you for this excellent DIY guide.

I just finished this job in 6hr.

I also recommend removing the radiator fan and the metal splash guard.

This is not an easy job but with patience, this is feasible.

Just did this job yesterday following this DIY. Pump had went out at 58k on my 08 335i AT. This DIY was awesome, very thorough, great pics, each step accurate and easy to follow.

As everyone says, not complex, but almost every step is a bear due to space limitations and everything covered in coolant. Took us about 6.5 hours not including lunch break and some parts runs.

Simple sounding things like removing a hose or setting/removing a spring clip took several attempts each from both myself and my friend, and we are no strangers to working on cars. The angle in which you have to grab these things and the amount of pressure required to separate them is a nightmare lol.

Part of me wondered at times if it would have just been easier to remove part/all of the front end. The time saved by not doing it may not have outweighed how easy that would have made it.

There is definitely a degree of finesse that is required. Dexterity plays an important role here as well. Yes, removing the spring clip type hoses are probably the most difficult part of this DIY but persistence as you know will rule the day. I tell people that I can be extremely patient as long as I get my way in the end and removing the intercooler and fan housing etc just wasn't going to be an option for me.
