Good call I forgot about that. You can spend thousands chasing down electrical issues in an E60, they’re pretty “soft” cars reliability wise. It’s the SMG that really scares me….That’s a lot of revs, and a lot of heat it has to deal with.

My mind wasn't really in the gutter, but I couldn't think of anything related to my crotch that has any likeness to a rocket except what I mentioned. I pretty well knew that couldn't be what the poster meant, but I had no idea either of what he did mean.

m5s are sooo much heavier though, they just bigger cars, more like muscle cars than sports sedans, don't get me wrong they are fast and lovely, but a few grand into the 335i will give you the same horsepower and way less weight. Though 335i isn't a special car like the m3/m5 are though. Personally i try to stay away from heavy cars, no matter how much horsepower they got lol.

^ After reading that post I'm way on the fence. Jeezus. And I've been looking online and can't find a true 3 pedal in the colors I want. this is basically a witch hunt. At least I have the exactly colors and 3 pedals I want. Silver, Black, Aluminum trim, 3 pedals. This is a logistical nightmare. Sleeping on it. More than likely I'll get the Dinan Oil cooler kit, update my Rev3 Vishnu, throw some M3 suspension parts under it and sport pkg items and call it a day. I can see the M5 will be Pandora's box. Every one I see is at 50k + miles.

Why buy a big heavy car for your weekend driver? You already have the e39. Wait a bit and get a new vette with a few miles on it.

M5

I may add something to the conversation here.
I'll be quick, ( gotta to go to work )
I was driving M5 before getting 335, yes it was SMG did NOT like a git of the drive ( test drive ) felt really heavy ( as mentioned above ) it wanted to fast really fast, but.... everything was happening above 60 Mph. I could not afford the speeding fines at those speeds ( we have sick laws here for speeding ),
knowing ( feeling ) this power out of the M5 and my foot.... the outcome would not be good for me in any way shape or form ( done )
in a sum the car is stupid fast, but I need an Autobahn for that.
SMG is another issue that I just could not swallow, talked to BMW mechanics ( now my 335 mechanics ) and all of them not just one, said the same thing, that this PIG WILL eat you, your money credit cards ( all of them ), house kids ( just kidding ).
In summary again, I don't want to be towed to the dealer from my Sat escape, it is embarrassing ( to me ) that car like M5 M6 will not get you home from a day trip. And it has happened to the M5 owners.
NO thanks.

I'll take my 335 anytime, with less on an fear of getting NOT home safely.
And one day I just may pull the trigger on the M3 ( overpriced beast ).

^ well said myE70. Hey, I had a thought, I posted, we all contributed, I did some research and was serious about. Before I pull the trigger on going deeper in the rabbit hole with my 335i, it was worth the thought. I'm just going to do the Dinan oil cooler, update my Vishnu (not fun) and retrofit the newer compass, homelink mirror.

As a former M5 owner, I say do it ... provided that:
1. you are prepared to refuel every 2-3 days, averaging 12-15 mpg
2. you'll pay a higher insurance premium
3. you'll need new rear tires every 7000 - 8000 miles
4. you will lose nimble handling because of the car's 2 ton mass

^ I have 45,500 on my 335i. It's a museum piece that sits in the garage hooked up to the battery trickle charger . The nimble handling and problems they have is an issue for me. I didn't realize they were over 4,000 Lbs. My E39 is like 3,500. Weighing everything out, and the reality of how rare the M5 is, especially in a 3 pedal color variation I want, it's a witch hunt. I can drop whatever coil over suspension I want on my car and for extra insurance I may just insure the "aftermarket" parts. My insurance offers that as an option. And I'll have the exact color, trim etc I want w/out the high insurance and headaches the M5 gives.

On a side note, during my research I found that the 2013 M5's have a recall and stop sale on them for engine failures. Something about a oil pump failure. Nice. My 335i has only thrown two check engine lights in the 3yrs I've owned it. Both for the same Evap code. I guess I'll just have to let the dealer do some work on it when the time comes if I don't want to deal with the spaghetti of hoses.

Wise decision. Seriously. After two weeks with the M5, despite how awesome the car is revving the hell out that V10, I had serious buyers remorse. It's not a practical car except for the fact that it can carry 5 passengers. Plain and simple, the M5 is like a supermodel girlfriend with 36DDs: her only purpose is to be shown off. Of all the BMWs I've owned, my current E92 is my favorite ... perfect balance of power and economy.

Prepare for everything to cost double or more! My 06 M5 has been a very dependable car with the exception of the SMG auto trans, I haven't had any issues from January 08 when the BMW recall lead to the replacement of my transmission with the updated one.

My M5 is not my daily driver so I would suggest you click on-> http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/ and view the sub topic "M60 M% and M61 M5 touring Discussion." As with most forums all of the problems will be brought to light and the sheer brilliance of the M5 won't.

Today these are excellent cars for the dollar and they will become collectors items just because of the V10. It is my intention to keep this M5 and pass it on to one of my boys.

Why not go with an e9X M3? I understand the appeal of the e60 M5 and I've looked at them as well but in terms of a making a more sound investment in an upgrade to an M car, the M3 seems like a no-brainer.

Yeah, I second that! Get an M3. It'll be newer than the M5 and a tiny bit more practical!

If you can afford the more expensive maintenance, gas consumption, and insurance go for it. There is nothing like the V10 growl and response. Plus, the E60 design actually looks more edgy then the new F10 design.
