I just hate to spend $100 on something I'll only use once.

You'll probably end up using it more than once. After my first coding session, I ended up coding several more times getting things dialed in and experimenting with other settings, tinkered with new possibilities I'd discovered after my first coding session, learned how to pull codes and all kinds of other interesting information out of INPA, figured out how to register a battery, performed the required coding for retrofits, coded my wife's MINI when she got it, and have since started to code other people's cars for free. If you're into techy stuff and general hackery, $100 isn't bad for a gadget that opens up various possibilities IMHO.

Like above you will end up using it more than once but I do have a cable in Austin if you really want to go that route.
