N53 - recent experiences

I wonder how others with N53 engines have been getting on recently, especially since the upgraded coils came out 2 years ago (or whenever it was).

Personally I have always liked the way my car has performed (3 year average MPG of 34.4 for example) but in my first 6 months with the car I had a lot of issues, many documented on here. It was largely the same thing over and over - coil failures, with them being swapped out one by one thanks to BMW's stock levels at the time, and often failing again.

I do quite a few miles - My car was on about 25k miles / 3 years old in the middle of all the grief and since the full set of coils/plugs was replaced in one go with the newer part, I have done another 60k with no engine problems at all, barring one bizarre instance of overheating (possibly the thermostat stuck, maybe the sensor was making it up) but that's it. Indeed my engine now - with 85k up - seems better than ever, especially on the new Shell VPower stuff. Overall I still love the car and while I am eyeing up M135i's, I will be waiting until they drop a fair bit in value first.

How have the others got on?

Yes, like you generally pleased with it (especially since fitting a PE). Replacement coils have performed well, but had a few issues though, including failing NOx and O2 sensors in the exhaust.

Also had an on-going hesitation issue on light throttle. Improved it a lot by fitting an OCC and partially blanking off the EGR, but I'm coming to the view it may be poor software or a faulty DME. My indie tells me BMW UK is supplying 8 replacement DMEs every month for N53 engines. Sounds like there might be an issue there...

Just wish it was a bit quieter at idle - but I know we have the piezo injectors to thank for that!

Only had mine a year, and so far other than 2L of oil it hasnt needed anything.

Very nice you hitting 34.4mpg average!
When I first got mine it sat at 32 for a while.
Now that I am more comfortable with it, and just love driving it it sits at 30.

Do keep getting tempted to have the mosselamn tune put on this to unleash the full power of the N53, but then the cost / insurance hike put me off.

As for coils, I cant comment
I can only assume the previous owner had all that headache. :P
