exhaust options for xdrive

I have a 2011 335 xdrive sedan.. I was thinking of eventually going with the bmw PE exhaust or maybe even the Dinan exhaust if/when they have it on sale again.

What other options are there out there? I'm thinking of looking for something slightly cheaper than the BMW PE exhaust.. maybe something that even weighs less? Not sure if the dealer would give me a hard time if I installed anything other than a BMW exhaust for engine warranty related items.

When the PE exhaust gets installed do you need to actually cut the existing pipes or are they simply bolted on? I was almost thinking of getting the PE exhaust and installing myself but I don't want to cut anything up.. heh.

PE exhaust requires that you cut your existing midpipe right behind secondary cats, as the system has new midpipe included that deletes the resonator.

It installs with (3) band clamps - (1) @ each of the front midpipe joints & (1) between midpipe & muffler.

Other exhausts available include REIkon, Remus, Eisenmann, Magnaflow, AA, etc. - but they don't all include new midpipe section - most are only muffler.

If you want something <$$ than PE, don't bother considering Dinan - everything they sell is overpriced

All questions already answered!

I installed a BMW PE last week on my 335xi sedan and I love it. I had two choices: BMW PE or Eisenmann Sport. I ended up getting the BMW PE because it is made by BMW, so it is legal and the fitment is perfect.

Here are the videos I've recorded so far:

Cold start (but 75F outside temperature):

Warm start:

and now my favorite:

Yeah I knew Dinan was overpriced but they claim some minor gains as well as a nice rumble.. as far as I can tell when on sale it is a similar price to the BMW PE exhaust. If there aren't better cheaper options I'm guessing it would be down to these 2.

I know 5 HP gains aren't anything but does the PE exhaust offer anything other than just sound? Is the PE exhaust lighter weight than stock? Sure I'm looking for a nice growl on the car but any gains would be beneficial (Don't want to do a DP or anything more drastic cause of warranty right now.. exhaust seems like a "Safe" upgrade).

Either way it sounds like something I wouldn't be comfortable installing myself... If it was just a bolt-on that'd be different. Guess I'll have to save up more and wait a bit.

thanks for the info!

You won't have any power gain with an exhaust, even the company advertises "5hp gain" lol

If you wanna get a lightweight exhaust, go with the VRSF exhaust, it is 40 lbs lighter than the stock exhaust...

Yeah I watched these videos already, thanks for providing them! Do you know if the BMW PE exhaust is lighter weight or provides any sort of gains at all?

For $1300 bucks+install cost I'm hoping to get a nice growl plus any sort of gains.. Otherwise I'll just wait till I'm out of warranty and do some better upgrades (more hp/dollar, heh).

Sorry, I've no idea how the PE weights...

Well, I would assume that it at least weighs less than stock exhaust by whatever the resonator weighs - since the PE deletes the resonator.

I lucked out & got my PE new from forum member for $675 shipped - this is for the NA single sided version though...

Since I got the exhaust for good price - I had the dealer install for $110.

I could have done it myself, but it's MUCH easier to do with car on a lift, which I did not have access to. Figured it was worth the $110 to have them do it & be responsible for the install and save me from trying to do it on ramps in my drive

i picked up a VRSF catback new for $750. its quiet when cruising, but sounds pretty good when you get on it. definatley can hear the turbos spooling better now, and it has zero rasp, with downpipes the sound gets even better. it does however hang down pretty low, if you arent lowered youll be fine, but i scrape it everywhere on KW's bottomed out.

Oh yeah that was pretty much a no brainer.. if I could find a BMW PE for like 800 bucks I'd buy it and install it just for the sound/fun of it. But when it's around 1300 bucks I start to cringe a little.

I had it installed at the BMW dealer me too. Don't have time to do it myself...!

Wait, 1QuikWS6 was talking about a PE for 328i/xi, not for 335i/xi.... Price are quite different hehe

I'm going back n forth deciding on the Dinan Exhaust vs. BMW PE! It's driving me crazy.

Was it this one?

I'm thinking I don't want to remove any catalytic converters.. If it's a catback exhaust wouldn't that mean it would keep the stock converter? Guess in this case it doesn't...

Ok cool thanks for the info.. I'm under warranty so I'm not sure how the dealer would feel about changing out from the cat back. Maybe I'll look at getting new wheels/tires instead of spending it on exhaust at this point. 1300+ for some extra sounds (don't get me wrong, good sounds, heh) is just a bit much.

After several exhausts....I would be concerned about drone if you have an auto trans. The drone made my teeth rattle it seems and very annoying. The PE does not have a drone problem at all. On acceleration you can hear the exhaust, but cruising it is quiet. From the rear of the car the exhaust is very noticeable. I guarantee in town with the auto you will be manually shifting just to hear the exhaust. The PE weighs a few pounds less, but still has some of the pinches in the exhaust piping as the original causing some minor back pressure.
