E92 Steering Wheel Buttons Not Working........Strange One

Hi all,

Firstly let me introduce myself, I've been driving a 2007 E92 320d M Sport for a year or so now. Love my BMW's and this is my second after previously owning an E46 320 M Sport.

Anyway, to cut a boring story short. Ive recently had to have my electronic steering rack changed due to the previous one seizing. Due to the MASSIVE cost BMW wanted to change it (2800+) I opted for one of an accident damaged car. All was fitted and works fine but I noticed after picking the car up that the buttons on the steering wheel (volume, phone, radio etc) did not work. They dont even light up so no power getting to them. I cant see why this would be linked to the rack change but the coincidence is uncanny!

Anyway, has anyone else had this problem? If so was it linked to the steering rack? Any light that can be shed would be greatly appreciated.

Presumably they removed the wheel to set the straight-ahead position and didn't reconnect the button ribbon-cable. Take the wheel off and plug them in. Or, better still, get whoever it was who did the rack to do it properly.

My guess would be that the steering wheel and airbag has been removed for someone to attempt to 'align the steering wheel'( which doesn't work) and they've left the plug undone for the buttons.

Cheers for the response people. This was my original guess, that the steering wheel had been disconnected following removal but this wasn't the case.

A friend of mine who is a technician at Sytner BMW Birmingham fitted the steering rack and he informed me that the wheel was not removed at all. The wheels were re-aligned at my local tyre specialist and they obviously didn't remove the wheel as the problem was noticed before I took it to them.

I've read that there could be a problem with the ribbon breaking and that this is a common fault? Don't get me wrong I'll certainly remove the wheel and have a check to make sure it is all plugged in and correct.

Really frustrated as I've been through the mill with trying to get the rack sorted under independent warranty which was unsuccessful. My experience with Warrantywise is one for another day!!!

Cheers people.

There's very little you can 'see' if the rotary coupling is broken. It is worth checking the connection behind the airbag first as it's easy to remove with just a long thin screwdriver.

Cheers Kris, I'll have a look at the connection first before investigation further.

No problems mate, look for the little cut outs in the back of the wheel -one at 3 o'clock the other at 9 o clock.Press little screwdriver (bout 6 inch) and this will pop airbag off.

Make sure that the battery is disconnected.

Bump, having a similar issue after work being performed on the car at a "reputable" shop.

Did the OP ever get this issue resolved?

Mine is going into the dealer hopefully it's a quick fix.
