I stand corrected. Sorry this question didn't pop up in my PE exam!

how do the other drivers treat newbies? I remember when I first started drag racing, the first couple of times there is a learning curve and some people would say things. I was looking for advice and help but nobody helped and I got all sorts of bad looks. maybe I'm different but I try to help people learn. i.e. sound system, teaching people guitar, showing bands how to book a tour, volunteering, was a transiting coach for at risk youth....

^^^ Rightaway - My local chapter (gvc cca) is full of really excellent people that are there to help and have fun. The instructors are coached to help you learn in an encouraging way. I have no reason to think that any other club would be different. In drag racing, it's head to head and there is a winner and a loser... maybe that's where that vibe comes from. At an hpde, the only thing you really win is taking your car and yourself home in one piece, and learning some new skills

But after autocrossing for many years both with the cca and scca as well as getting into hpde the past few years people have been almost all fantastic and friendly.... well maybe a couple dicks at a few autocrosses, but again there is a winner at the end of the day there... maybe that competition comes into play.

The instructors I have had all have been great, and they have to be in order to get into a 3500 pound car with a perfect stranger and go 120 miles an hour in order to help that person learn

At the end of the day it's like anything else, you get what you give- if you show up with a good attitude, a willingness to demonstrate active listening and comprehension, and come prepared, you'll find it quite enjoyable.

thanks, that makes me feel reinsured. How much does a day at the track cost? how does a typical day go? tech than a meeting, than ..... or is there an instructor and they show you technics and lines in your car? I live on the NJ/PA border. so I think the closest tracks New Jersey Motorsports Park or Pocono Raceway. Has anybody been to either one?

Everyone at these events started somewhere with people helping them along the way. We were all noobs at one point. Most of the people who post here live in PA/NJ so NJMP is our local track. The cost of the event depends on the track, days of the week, number of days and who is running the event. I have seen one days at NJMP for $185-$295 depending on the group.

A typical day goes like this:
1. Fill up with a full tank of gas before getting to the track.
2.Drive to the track sign in at main gate and the head to the paddock by the track.
3. Park and head to registration with your helmet.
4. Registration they will have you sign another waver, hand in emergency contact info, check your license, hand out schedule and run group and instructor assignments. Possibly check your helmet
5. Empty out your car completely and put your numbers on.
6. Head to day of tech with your tech form. Typically they require a more in depth pre-event tech inspection before the event.
7. Go back and park in your spot. Your instructor may come and find you there.
8. Drivers Meeting.
9. The organizers may have a time after this meeting for students to meet instructors.
10. Classroom time to talk about car control and more about hpde.

Hope this helps. Plenty of good people here willing to answer your questions.

Agree with everything Steal ^^ wrote. Usually HPDE is 2 days and some are 3. They go from $300+ depends on the club. BMW is around $400 for two days. Porsche usually a bit cheaper ~$300-400.

You or your mechanic needs to check the car before HPDE in accordance with the required tech form that you get from the club's site. Each chapter has their own site. You will also fill out medical form (doc and emerg contact infor in case something happens). Once you get to the track usually they do tech inspection the night before and/or in the morning 7-8am on the first day. The drivers meeting is at 8am and everybody participates except instructors that go to their own meeting.

You will also get the number after tech and your assigned instructor will find you after the 8am meeting. You will also get a schedule. Usually each group gets two 20-30min sessions in the am and the same in the pm. The day is over by 4-5 pm.

Also, if there is an issue with your car there are always plenty of folks that can help. Many bring spare parts also. I have my checklist that I developed to make sure I don't forget anything. You will also need approved helmet (i.e. SA2010). If you are completely new your instructor may offer to drive your car 2-3 laps or you can ask him. I did this the first two times and would recommend it! It is much easier to get a feel for what your car can do and to learn the line that your instructor prefers.

At the end of the day most guys are there to have fun and hang out afterwards and have a beer and dinner. If somebody needs help people are readily available.

Feel free to ask more questions. Hope this helps!

I did my first event with Schattenbaum PCA. Great folks there. I knew jack shit when I started ...practically nothing, not even what an apex was. Showed up with a tank of gas, my helmet and jet lag after taking a redeye flight from CA. Bone stock car. I had a BLAST ...you need to be willing and ready to learn, and some humility to accept the fact you are a n00b - and you'll have no problems (except financially after you start upgrading your car ).

If you go to an event I attend, I'll personally help you learn the ropes ...I'm sure others in this thread will do the same thing.
First event I'm doing next year is probably going to be the Del Val CCA @ Summit Point, WV in April. Pretty ride down and three solid days of instruction.

Got invited to Monticello Motor Club by BMW for a free track day. Got to test 640, 650, M5, M6, MC, 760 and Alpina B7. Highlight of the day

1) someone managed to crash a M6 into a guard rail during a auto-x session
2) someone trashed the clutch of a M6 GC (wouldn't stop smoking for a good 5 mins)
3) BMW NA showed up to test drive the m235 (still in camo), 435 and i3. I tried taking pics of the m235 but the employees wouldn't allow it lol.

More details on the crash?

And how was the 640? Decent power? By clutch, do you mean manual? How does the manual feel in such a luxury car and these modern engines?

They sectioned off the road course for auto-x drills. Final drill was a S pattern followed by hard stop. Driver got sideways on the first then, never made the 2nd, spun out and crashed. BMW personnel insisted on keeping cars in sports mode, big mistake if you ask me. Trying to modulate throttle on 500+ hp car for noob is asking a lot.

Power wasn't an issue for any if these cars. The 640 was x-drive so it handled the worst. The manual I'm referring to is a traditional 6 speed, I personally didn't like it but then again very clutch/manual takes getting used to. I just found the clutch pedal to be really weak, no resistance. Then again I had that same complaint with my 335i loaner, maybe the clutch is just stiffer on the Z4 lol.
