Hey everyone, couple of weeks ago I drained my differential and color of original was like tea color and filled with red line that was honey color, I picked up another quart of red line to fill it up and thought I would drain some out again like half a quart and refill with new redline since i have a quart to use and to my surprise what I drained today was very dark oil looked like engine oil only after one weeks and about 100-150 miles! what gives ?

Has anyone rechecked their fluid color at a later date ?

I called Red Line Tech line and they seem to think that it's just that the Redline oil cleaned up the walls of the case and asked that I send them a sample to be analyzed .

Perhaps you underfilled the diff causing the fluid to burn and become dark? I used redline as well 3K miles ago (50K miles) on both front and rear but haven't checked the fluid since. I was planning to change again at 75K.

Well I extracted 21oz and was able to pump in the entire new quart 32oz and started to overflow, so I was 11oz under, could that have done it?

I should get two new quarts and drain it all again and refill it, maybe add gear treatment to it? I don't know!

I will wait first to see what Red Line comes back with on their analysis.

I had tried that setup per Mike Miller's instructions, but just couldn't build enough suction. I will tighten up all the connections again and reduce the length of the tubes. See if that does it ...

It got worse after the fluid change, noise got real loud in and out of the car after the change. It was bearable before.

BTW... RedLine Oil analysis revealed that 90 percent of the sample was RedLine mixed with what was leftover original oil 10%.
Also, the viscosity was still holding well, but the color change to real dark oil is contributed by the 'cleanup' of the case that the Redline oil did.

did you use the correct redline oil? also you under fill at first change so you prbly made it worst.

Yes I used the right oil, and it's irrelevant if I initially was a few ounces low as I hardly drove the car that week.

The point here is why did it go in the first place, dealer and BMW hint to it being defective and they did issue some compensation and I am thankful for that but the bill was still big and the answer still outstanding .

Hey guys... I'm about to do my rear diff oil change and realize that I got the wrong oil. I bought the redline mt90 when my dumb ass was suppose to buy the high performance gear oil. Now my question is, can I still use the mt90 or should I get the hp gear oil?

Just did the change the differential fluid out. I had the car leveled. Made sure by using a leveler and putting it at the bottom of the door seat.

Not sure how much I drained out but when I put the Redline 75w90 in it took less than a bottle. It started spilling out even earlier but I just kept pumping because from what I read throughout this thread it should take around 1.2 qts.

Did you check the level before you jacked it, then got it the same? I know my car has a distinct lean to the front, making it dead level would not be right for the fill.

What size tubing did you use on the pump? I could not get all my oil out with 3/8" and had to move to 1/4.

Not sure how it is in the US but most of the driveways here slope down so I had to jack the car up a bit more on the rear to get it leveled. I didn't check the level before I jack up the car though. As for the pump. I use the orange hose that came with the transfer pump I got. I'm not sure what size it was but I think it was the 3/8". I'm not sure why you would need the 1/4". I move that 3/8" hose all around when I was pumping to try to get all the fluid out.

I did this tonight and it was incredibly easy following this DIY with one exception - I didn't bother jacking up the car - I just squeezed underneath and changed it as it sat. Definitely need a breaker bar to release the plug. Used the Redline 75W-90. Had a slight smell after the test drive, but it went away after a longer drive. I figure it was just the oil breaking in.

I did mine the same way, squeezed in underneath.

after a few hundred miles, extract a few ounces out and check the color of the red line. in my case, in about 150 miles it was black wonder if it does any cleaning of the internals.

So, I ordered a couple quarts of redline 75w-90 to do this. Car is a 335i with 94k on it. Its been dealer maintained and I have all service records from PO- was a little old lady.

I squeezed underneath the car very easily, and cracked open the fill plug with the breaker bar. Piece of cake.

However, I was startled to find that the fluid (presumably factory fill unless somehow the lady changed it..doubtful) looked like new.

I checked it and put it on paper, was a perfect honey color like new XO fluid. So im wondering....do I continue with the fluid change as most of the darkness and particles has gravitated to the bottom and I only saw the very top nice fluid?

Or do I return the red line fluid and assume that its still ok?
