135i OR 335i, Ready to buy...decisions, decisions

Ok...this time is now and need a little assistance from you guys. I realize there is a biased towards 1-series here, but what would you do in my situation?

Daily Driver, Weekend Road-racing, would still need to cart around a 2 & 5yr old occasionally and enough room for baseball and golf bags in the trunk.

To be honest, all 3 choices can fit those requirements lol. Unless your 2/5 year old is over 67 inches tall, you should be good with coupes...

1er
Pros-
Cheaper by a couple grand
~300 lbs lighter
Faster than the 335i because of weight

Cons-
Some people think it's ugly (I don't)
Used part market is a lot smaller
Wheel choices are limited
Offsets are terrible making it difficult to run wider size tires

Everything else is virtually identical besides looks.

+1 on the wheels choices sucking...hard to find aggressive offsets for the rear.

Personally, the 1 series grew on me ALOT. When I first started looking for a car, I wanted a 335i coupe badly, it looked so nice and sleek, modern and beautiful. But as time passed I started considering the 135i more and more and it definitely grew on me. I absolutely love the rear end. In the end I chose the 1 series because I felt that it looked way better than the 3 series and it was unique. I can go weeks without seeing another 1 series and when I do see one, it's usually just a standard 128i! I love my car, but when it's time to let it go, I'm going to go for a used 335is coupe with low miles. I'd love to experience both cars!!

It is a difficult choice, but choose the one that'll make you happy! And not others!!

I had a pair of E90 335 and now a pair of 135 - driving the E82, it's easy to see the heavy E90 influence on the car, which is a good thing (for me anyways). The E90 did most everything well; it was quick, handled well, is attractive and after they finally got the HPFP issues ironed out, it was very reliable as well.

I drove my E90 for HPDE a couple times a year (run 8.5" 162 square at 255 no spacers needed) and then also for routine 700+ mile jaunts to the Midwest and got almost 30 mpg.

My only adamant advice: be sure to get the sport seats. As the E82 is coupe only, the E90 and will have the advantage of 4 doors for your kids.

All that praise for the E90 aside....I went with the 1 because I liked the way it drove just that little bit more than the 3. It's smaller, lighter and has the same power, feels really connected to the road and driver - tough to quantify, but I feel it every time I fire it up.

Yes, it does tend to understeer (as do most modern BMW thanks to the lawyers) and it needs more rubber up front, but there are plenty of knowledgeable folks here on the board to help with that.

To be honest, you wont go wrong with either choice. Good luck!

between the "weekend road racing" and taking your kids around, which one do you need more?

The rear seats on the 1 has room enough to sit 2 adults if the driver doesn't have his/her seat all the way back. However, getting in the back seat of the coupe is difficult. This might not be the case with the vert. I am 6ft @ 175lbs and I know I can fit two of me's in the back with two more of me's up front. Also, no AC vents in the back.

The E82 has a much better feel. Also, the size is one of the things why I love my car. Aesthetically, the E82 isn't for everyone. I still think the front looks very dated but it looks like a little beast that's not happy. I love the rear a lot. Of course, I don't get lost in the parking lots anymore...not many 1ers or something like 1er out there.

The E90 is much more practical. Four doors are nice to have to minor utility work. I feel the E90 is more stable. The size isn't terribly bad but the E82's size is just amazing. If I love the E82's rear, I love this car's rear even more! Better get M-sport or Performance rear! The car feels great to drive, even though my ex-car had the N51. I miss that car a lot!

The E92...I don't see much of a reason if you're considering E90 and E82. I'm honestly not a fan of E92 except 335is just because it's a sexy beast. I'd even the take an E90 M3 over an E92 M3. Also, I've never driven an E92 but it should be very close to an E90.
