Hey Chriztofor, thanks for the right up, nice DIY. My '07 335i has 76k miles and i'm thinking about doing a transmission fluid change with castrol. Have you noticed any change in MPG?

No problem. No significant change. I think I may also try Valvoline Synthetic. I believe it is compatible (must check the spec sheet).

When you change your fluid, give us an update. So far, no one has reported transmission failure. (I don't understand how changing old, dirty, fluid is ever a bad thing.)

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

Just completed the transmission fluid change, and also flushed the power steering fluid, I used Castrol import MV fluid, vehicle runs nice and smooth, and the power steering is a bit easier with turning, etc. No complaints at all, and nothing negative to report. I too did some extensive research and found that the Castrol import MV fluid is comparable to the OEM fluid, and so is the Valvoline synthetic, both were available yet the Valvoline was about .50 cents cheaper (which is odd that synthetic would be less lol), I Opted to stick with the Castrol brand because i've used their fluids on all my other vehicles and trust the brand. I figure if Castrol holds up to OEM and handles well then i'll stick with it, if not I can always do another Flush and just add Valvoline synthetic at a later date

I found a nice DIY video for this



The vid is for a Jag using the ZF 6HP26 transmission (which is a slightly bigger version of the 6HP19 in my E90 325i.) The process is quite similar to what we'd see on an E90, the exhaust pipe might not be in the way though.
He shows a nice trick to loosen that pesky fill plug. Also (surprise, surprise!) he uses Mercon SP ATF
I have crosschecked this on other forums (Audi, Jag, LandRover, Hyundai Genesis) where they have models with the 6sp ZF transmission. Mercon SP is indeed being used as a cheaper alternative to the ZF Lifeguard6. Hyundai actually charges around $75 for a quart of LG6
Anyway, to each his own. I have bought myself plenty of Mercon SP and plan to do a drain and fill pretty soon. HTH

I did a drain and fill twice using Mercon SP, she's running real smooth. I did round out the hex hole on the plastic drain plug, I think I will just drop and replace the pan at 60K.
Btw, I found this on another forum regarding Valvoline Maxlife ATF. I think I will use it next time as it is a full synthetic that satisfies Shell M1375.4 spec, among many others.

Just an addition to all great instructions. You can monitor the transmission fluid temperature using DIS. Also with DIS after you are done to me seemed like a good idea to perform oil change adjustments reset. It reset the oil deterioration adaptations and transmission adaptations. After that the shifts will be abrupt, but this is the process to relearn the new adaptations.

How do you do the reset? Do you need an obdII system?

Yes, you need K-CAN or D-CAN cables depending on the production date of your car. In the Coding section of this forum is explained what cable to get, where to get it and how to set it up.

Quick tip. I made sure I used a "Level" from driver door to passenger door on the bottom of the transmission pan and raised or lowered the driver side to get the trans level. I then checked the level from front to rear of car on trans pan to make sure it was as level as possible.

What fluid do you recommand for 08 328i GM automatic transmission.
Overseas right now. Only place I can get it fluid is from Amazon.
I'm at 75k plan to do it myself. Seems easy. Drain oil and fill it/run it/fill it. right?

I am very keen to see how these recent flushes pan out. (pun intended)

My 330i is at 150,000 km or about 95,000 miles.

I'm really keen to know how much difference there really is between these fluids.

Since the OP posted images from a non-XI, I am sharing some from my 2006 330XI. The front driveshaft is directly in the way of the fill plug. It does make it a pain as you have to disconnect the driveshaft to fill the tranny back up. Then install the driveshaft so you can run the car for 20 minutes, then remove the driveshaft and top the tranny off again. I do not know if you can run the car and go through the gears without hooking the driveshaft back up, so I went the long route and re-connected it in between to make sure I didn't screw anything up.

It did make a big difference. I started to notice a harder jerk when it downshifted and sometimes the gears would hang longer than they used to. After changing the fluid/filter, those things went away.

Thanks again for this DIY. I did this maintenance at 94K (this past weekend) much needed. I can tell you that my MPG has increased quite a bit. I also did the rear differential and brake fluid change. For the tranny I ended up using about 6.5 quarts. I bought 8 just in case from Amazon. WELL worth it...
