DSC failed... Again...

Hey guys

My DSC module has failed again by the looks of it. It is showing the same error message that I saw a few year back. I was driving on the Gateway heading home on Monday and out of nowhere, the warning light came on.

I just came back from the border range run with the BMW club and looks like maybe the computer doesn't like to be worked too hard Last time it failed, I also just returned from a run with the 1addict members.

Anyone seen or know anyone with this problem in Australia? I know there are some ppl in UK with this problem but I haven't seen anyone that had it failed twice. I waited for over 3 weeks for the DSC module last time it Fu*k up. The they had to also replace the whole Nav system too as the stealership also stuffed up the Nav when they change the DSC module.

Thx Skidz. I just felt like I need to vent so thx for reading. Lucky I took out an extended warranty this time this car. I paid too much last time when the rear diff on my old X5 broke around 5 year old. Judging by the previous service history of this E90, buying an extended warranty direct from stealership at even $3700 was a no brainer and looks like it is gonna pay off. Mind u, if the car was as reliable as it should be, I should not even need to waste $3700 for extended warranty in the first place.

Last trip was $2000 where they fix a oil lead in oil sump 2 weeks ago cover by extended warranty. This trip will probably be around the $4000-6000 mark if they end up changing DSC module like last time. I still need to get them to fix the chugging problem which they have already looked at more than 3 times already. They still have no idea what is causing it. I hope I get the car back before the breaky run with the BMW club or I will be really pissed.

Shame the lemon law are not tougher here in Australia.
Found this article which was a good read but looks like I have no chance if I was to ask them for any compensation.

i did read somewhere that if the DPF has a leak it can affect the electronics and all you need to do is call a chimney sweep to give it a good clean. if you were in syd i am sure dave or allen could recommend one

DSC module is about $3-$4k to fix... definitely one of the ones you want to try avoid.

Seen it happen on a few E92s recently... 335 and 325. Strangely less common on the 1ers

Any idea what it would cost for u to do that? Just thinking if this sh!t happens again after extended warranty expires, at least I have another option rather than $4k via stealerships.

I might sell the car when warranty expires so car will be 6 years old. Not sure if I should sell privately. I don't want the new owner calling me up saying i sold him a dogy car. This is the annoying part, I always sell my car privately but I dont feel right selling the car because it has problem and I'm just passing the problem to some other poor bugger. I wish they would take the car back and compensate me for another car at a good price but I think I'm dreaming.

So it does seem to failed then. What are the chances of it happening twice to same car Any guess what the main cause is? It just seem strange that it always happens after I come back from a cruise.

The first time it happened, the problem went away for a day and came back.

I guess your should be still ok if it has been running normal for awhile.

My car at BMW today. They said looking at least 1-2 week. We will see about that

you know what triggered it strangely enough, I was parked at a weird angle in front of my girlfriends house with the steering locked to the left and car was running for maybe 15 minutes me and her talking i totally forgot car was on. i had to turn it on/off few times then it was fine. this was 2-3 weeks ago no mention of it since.

Service department call me today. The DSC warning light came on this time because of a steering angle sensor issue. So they don't have to replace the module

With the chugging problem at cold start, they recon that it is a software issue. So they have updated the software and have been testing it for the last 2 day with success.

They want to hold till next week just to make sure that the problem has in fact been rectified.

Did you try this DIY?

I had similar errors, but not exactly the same. I had the following faults all at once: DSC, Active Steering, Tire Pressure Monitor. My car is a 2007 335i.
I found this post the most helpful, you should check it out. It's a DIY to fix the faults. It is really well done. If you don't want to touch your motherboard and reflow connections with solder/paste, then I would just clean the optical disc:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=520467

On other posts, the consensus is that it will cost about $1,300 to completely fix with new optical disc and board (with new IR sensors, etc...) My dealer gave the same quote.

BTW, I drove my car for about 3 weeks with these faults. Dealer said it wouldn't be a problem.

I am pretty good friends with the service guy at my dealership and he offered to replace just the optical disc for $150 using the SZL Repair Kit:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-SZL-Re...-/300880850396
He said it had a 70-80% chance of working and thankfully it did.

To tell you truth, the DIY was so well written, I was tempted to do it myself, but my friend said that you need to be careful with static electricity and dust on the disc...I figured $150 was a fair price anyway so had him do it.

When I got the disc back, I understood why the IR sensor was having a hard time calibrating...it was coated with white, crystal-like substance...looked like a bunch of snowflakes. Pic 1 is a close up of this, while Pic 2 shows the whole optical disc next to a quarter...not as big as I thought it was going to be.

Anyway, hope this helps.
