For those of you outside warranty, looks like there is an engineering company in Canada that re-manufactures (improves) the Urea tank and systems for a fraction of the dealer price, only $499! I've definitely saved this link for 'down the road' when it happens to mine.

Too funny. I was right by the area today where they're located.

A few months ago I brought my car to the dealership regarding the DEF tank issue. Sure enough there were multiple stored codes and I was quoted $2000 to replace the tank. I recently brought my car into another dealership to have my injectors replaced and mentioned my DEF tank to them. They didn't look into it because there were no codes at the time. I contact BMW NA and verified that I am covered under 7yr/70,000 miles for this emissions part. Only problem is there is no code for it at this time so they won't replace it until there's a code. They won't go off previous history of the code. What kind of BS is that?

Edit. I'm currently at 68,xxx miles.

SES Code P203a in mine at 40500 miles; I am the second owner. Dealer quotes $1,900 to replace active DEF tank due to a faulty "reductant level sensor," last week. I have the powertrain plus extended warranty and find out on Monday if they are covering it or not. In the meantime, I topped off the urea tank and cleared the code, and it has not come back on.

It is an emissions part so it's not covered under a regular powertrain warranty. However, check out the back of the service and warranty manual and see if your state falls under California Emissions laws which covers emissions parts for 7 years/70,000 miles. After talking with BMW NA, Pennsylvania is covered.

Had one of the tanks replaced last month and two days ago I noticed that the rear of my car was covered in whitish looking spray. We had rain all weekend so I didn't think much of it. Last night I saw a large DEF leak on the ground. When I looked underneath I was greeted with a ton of crystallized DEF. Apparently either the passive tank cracked or the connection between the two tanks came apart. Of course the whitish caked on spray isn't road scum from the rain but DEF. The tank must have ruptured while I was on the hwy.

SES went on this AM.

I was planning to road trip in this car on the 25th, so hopefully I'll get a loaner on the 24th (earliest app for loaner) .

Getting my monies worth with the extended warranty.

I guess in your case it's all due to... the hot weather?

Of course I am joking. Sorry to hear about the problem.
