Water pump failure and cost?

So I'm literally sitting off of I-95S in my car waiting for a tow truck. I was on my way to my folks in Virginia beach and got an engine temperature high error then engine overheated after about 87 miles on the highway. My car has 81,683 miles on it. This is my first time getting these errors and no signs of smoke. However I did see some coolant leaked out near the coolant reservoir. I was able to check if I had any coolant after letting it cool (of course) and it still had sufficient amount with the floating level stick. My car is running fine but this is my third attempt to drive the car and get the same error immediately. I think it may be my water pump. Do you guys have any recommendations of any Indy shops in Virginia Beach, VA? The BMW checkered flag dealership said about $1250 for a water pump replacement if that is the case here.

Any help would be appreciated.

Waterpump failures are common above 70k miles for N54 cars. $1250 seems to be the going rate for dealerships. However, if you source the parts from 'getbmwparts.com' and take it to an Indy Shop, it can be done for under $1000.

That sucks.

I got mine changed at Clem's (near Baltimore). I don't know how close you got to Va Beach, but a tow down there may be prohibitively expensive.

With more than 51,000 miles on my 335i, I am dreading the day this happens to me as I know its inevitable.

Luckily, my family has AAA plus so the first 100 miles of towing is free and then $4 for each mile. I had to make it to a wedding as well so I had it towed down and will get the service done here. I saw that getbmwparts has the thermostat and water pump kit for about $500. I wish I could do it myself but I need it done correctly and ASAP. It's my daily driver and now she is sick....

Has anyone had service at Atlantic Autowerks?

I think getting AAA for anyone who has more than 50k miles isn't a bad idea. One water pump failure will pay for itself.

It really sucks that when this happens, most of us will be stranded and have to be towed. You would think for a car that's so electronically and technologically smart, this could be prevented by a code thrown before getting stranded....Purchasing an expensive car you should never have to be stranded unless a blowout or something like that

Meh, no cars give you any sort of warning of a part failing. Technically the water pump does store faults in the DME when it's starting to go bad, but doesn't trigger any lights. If you have your car serviced regularly, a tech should be able to pick up on it.

Atleast the pumps last a long time.

↑ This. My water pump failed right around 80k miles on my 07 335i, your car will not throw codes on the dash for this, eventually you will get an overheating / limp mode warning. If you know someone who has a scanner with BMW's proprietary information in it (the super expensive ones that allow for active engine monitoring) there will be a BMW specific code for the water pump. My code stated something along the lines that the WP was not able to get up to speed.

Ended up replacing my WP and Thermostat, got the parts Wholesale from VOB BMW in Rockville. Paid around $495 for the Pump, Thermostat, 3 aluminum bolts, and a gallon of BMW Coolant; getbmwparts has great prices on OEM if you have the time to wait for shipping, but I did not.

Took about 4 hours to do the work but much of that time was spent trying to finagle the thermostat out of the tiny hole between the front cross member and the inter-cooler piping / drinking beer.
