Staggered Setup on the Xi

Hi Guys, I'm looking to get another 335, but still deciding on i or xi. I like the idea of an xi I'm just concerned that an aggressive staggered setup will mess up the awd system. Any experience with this?

So do I with no issues. 225/40R18 front and I think the rears are 255/35R18.

AFAIK, you should be fine as long as rolling diameters are 1% or less difference. ZSP staggered is a .236% difference or something like that.

I think my wife has the same front but with 265/35 18's rear. Not one issue at all.

Any idea if these will work on my car? lol 06 325xi 6spd. If they fit I may just throw springs on it, replaced my shocks few thousand miles ago. I'll adjust the tires to make sure there is less than 1% variance.

can't you just throw some spacers on it to equal it out so it won't mess up the xi system

quite an aggressive offset for those E63 wheels.. ET 14/18. gonna have to be pretty low and stretch the tires quite a bit to pull it off. If you have an xi, id look elsewhere

ummm...what spacers change the outside diameter of the tire? The AWD system is sensitive to differences in the rolling diameter of the wheels front to back. If the diameter is significantly different (>1%) the front axle will turn faster or slower than the rear axle. The transfer case can't handle this and will fail prematurely.

if you are curious, there is a calculator under the wheel and tire section of this forum!

you just type in your stock setup, and then type in the new setup and it will tell you if the rolling diameter is more than 1%. if it is, dont do it! for the xi that is, I dont think it matters one lick if you have the rwd.

FYI, sport package 335i and 328i XDrive and Xi cars come with an OEM staggered setup, albeit not "agressive"

You can run any staggered set up you want. Just keep the rolling diameter percentage less than 1%. As stated above just use the tire calculator

Thanks guys for the reply's. I wouldn't want to get an xi unless I could run something really aggressive in the back, like 285's on 19x9.5. Has anyone driven hard on a setup like that with an xi for at leas 20k miles?

Check out this thread:

"who has the most agressive XI stance?"
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=767485

tons and tons of pics of crazy aggressive wheels, spacers, offsets, stretched tires, and most (if not every one of them) staggered. You can run the same setups found for the 335i, which is usually 8.5 front and 9.5 or 10 rears. Tire size is the factor here, not the wheel staggering. Im no expert, but i believe the wider the tire, the thinner the wheel wall? I see most tire sizes at 235/35/19 and 265/30/19 (thinner wall rating for the rears as they are wider).

staggered is seriously no problem, as long as you stick to the 1% rule. It simply means you have to know what tire size you are buying, rather than any old setup off the forums. The AWD wants to move both front and rear wheels at the same rate of speed, so the tires need to be the same rolling diameter. Since the RWD only cares about the back axle, it makes no difference. Follow this rule and you are golden!

I encourage the XI!! You've never seen anything jump off the line so fast as a 335xi.

I would think 285s on 9.5s would be a bit too wide of a tire? Might fit better on a 10"

Thats my setup and this is exactly what's stated in the manual as far as staggered setups go.

I run a staggered setup on my 19" summers. 265 rears, 235 fronts. With the RWD bias from a stop, it's valuable, and drives great.

The car comes from the factory staggered, so there's no problem with the differentials.

285s pretty wide for any e92. I've read of 275s rubbing in some circumstances.
