My BMW extended warrenty review - the dreaded clutch judder

As per the title I thought I'd share my experience with BMW extended warranty for anyone who's thinking of taking one out

We all know about the clutch judder problems which seem to plague manual BMW's. I hadn't really noticed it on mine until the other day in some heavy traffic on the M62 when it became really apparent so I rang Stratstone Leeds and booked it in for checking over. I had to agree to pay them to remove the gearbox for inspection

After a worrying few hours I got a phone call saying the flywheel bearing had failed covering the clutch in grease - result, new clutch and flywheel all under warranty Not bad considering my car has 59800 miles and I have only had the warranty just over a month.

So to sum it up if anyone is thinking about taking out a BMW extended warranty I highly recommend it! I've never had any form of warranty before due to their 'wear and tear' get out of anything clause but no such problems with the BMW one

Yeah I had the occasional judder when it was cold but because the car sits all week and only gets used at weekends I was putting it down to that. I'd give them a ring mate, you've just got to agree to cough up for the gearbox removal but if there's a fault the warranty will pay that. Mines a 318d but they suffer from the same issues. BMW have a new flywheel and clutch out now which cures the judder and so far its night and day difference, it feels a different car to drive

I have the judder in 1st but its not the end of the world

If you get the bite straight away its no issue. But if you try feed it slowly it likes a nice judder to itself

Is there not some clutch delay valve mod or something that can be done?

Just phoned Bowker Stringy, as its my nearest dealership, however like you - i could be looking at potential gearbox out cost, which i can't really afford with the GF's birthday / valentines coming up

Might just grin & bear it as it only really does it when its cold, or look into getting the CDV removed.

My 320d has been unbearable this week with the cold weather especially with lots of short journey's, I was thinking of doing the same thing and giving Stratstone Leeds a ring, they have been great with me so far and have no complaints. How much was the gearbox removal Stringy? My car is similar mileage and I plan on keeping it for a while so want this fixing!!

Yeah that's the only risk to it. If its only when cold you can always grin and bear it for abit longer, I just wanted mine doing before 60k incase they tried to put it down to wear and tear, I read on a forum somewhere 60k is when they start to put flywheels down to wear and tear items

Yeah give them a ring mate, Stratstone Leeds have been absolutely spot on as always, if they can get it on warranty for you they will. My local stealers are actually Stratstone Harrogate but I go further out of my way to Leeds because of there excellent service and willing to help. It was going to be about 300 inc vat for taking it out and putting it back in if no work was needed but it was a risk. Mine was 4 years old in December so it qualified for the '4 plus' reduced labour rate, if you cars newer it could be a little more. If you do end up having the new clutch and flywheel tho the difference is amazing, I didn't realise how ruined mine must have been until having the new one in

Yeah its quite a known problem the dealers are aware of so don't take any fob offs

Thinking about it if its the bearing like it was on mine which is classed as a 'mechanical failure' the mileage shouldn't matter when claiming.

Let us know how you get on

Just looking at this, so would I not be able to claim on my 08 E93 if its done over 60.000 miles.
Which cover is best value, the named component one comes back at 630 per year which would be worth it I guess if something goes wrong, but I suppose it depends on their idea of "wear and tear".

If you are close to 60k miles take it out monthly, it is a rolling monthly contract then so the price does not increase.
Take it out annually at 50k mies and go to renew at 60k+ next year and the price will almost double.

You would still be able to claim but I read some reports on the Internet about after 60k they are abit keener on the wear and tear clause. As above take it out before 60k. I'm paying 40 a month for the fully comp cover at the moment. I did a quote with 60,500k and the price went upto over 70 a month! Massive jump so do it before the 60k

My has done 66000 so i have to pay the more expensive option which works out at 56 per month for the named component one with 100 excess.
having paid out over 1200 quid in November for a faulty DSC unit this seems like a good idea if the clutch is about to go south soon.

I spoke to Stratstone today about the clutch and fly wheel, The flywheel is a covered part under warranty the clutch isn't, that's a wear and tear item in their eyes. Stingy got a new clutch and flywheel under warranty because his flywheel had failed and leaked over his clutch. Just something to be aware of. If they take your gearbox out and find its just a faulty clutch you will have to cough up for the lot!

I would recommend the Warrenty also. I just got my cylinder head pleased at Stratstone due to lifter ticking. Only 48000 miles I have named component warranty. Safe to say it was worth the money...
