you won't get a code. almost every single setting for the 3 stage manifold is the same. that dealer was blowing smoke.

my wife's car is actually Canadian, nothing different at all about the DME coding.

Same. Canadian car, 3IM since February and stock engine software, everything's been perfect.

So, can the 3 stage manifold from the N51 newer 328i's be used on the N52? Or does it have to be a N52 based 3 stage intake manifold

No, should be exactly the same as I understand. The N51 came stock with the 3 stage intake. Someone else will chime in and confirm but you should be good.

I have an n51 too I believe from checking a site someone posted to verify, 2009 328i xDrive. Would I just need to get the ECU flashed to a 330i? Thanks!

This has been discussed to great lengths and there is no way to flash the ECU to 330i spec. However, going aftermarket with Active Autowerke or Evolve will bring you up to similar power numbers as a 330i

Thanks! I was researching tons of info and wanted to double check. I did confirm the part# match. I cant wait, just waiting to complete install on my day off.

It'll make a huge difference, my car (N51) came with the 3 stage IM from the factory, and I had it tuned to around 260hp, honestly don't know how I'd drive it stock . . .

Last month I had the 3-stage manifold installed ( a Turner Motorsports kit) and a ECU flash. A few basic mods: charcoal filter delete, a silicone intake tube, the 3-stage and a BMW Perf Exhaust.....should be 260 hp. The real test is how well it drives daily....quick, fun, more power. This is how the car should have been factory set up. I guess it's not a 330 and more than a 328 so it's kinda like a 329. Lot more fun to drive!!

I just had a 3.0 manifold fall into my lap and I'm having it installed along with a Eurobox on Friday.

I have been reading and reading about "post-op" flashes/coding/tunes being "required" to make this manifold work properly/maximally in the 328i and there is some conflicting info out there.

My mechanic, who is a master tech BMW mechanic, says that the computer in the 328i should pick up the electronics of the manifold and adapt on its own, without flashes or tunes. In other words, the software is there. I have read posts by others on the forum who were told the same thing by their mechanic when they were contemplating this conversion, but...I have yet to find ONE of these people who did it and followed up with a forum post.

So...what is the definitive answer here? Is there one? Seems like there should be. Does the 328i require a reflash or an aftermarket tune to have this manifold operate properly or optimally? OR...does the tune most people get after doing the conversion simply have its own benefits?

Thanks!

Update: This was posted elsewhere today concerning this topic -

"There is no real conflicting info - your mechanic is right in that the manifold will "work" but he's also wrong because it won't work correctly. You need a flash. As I said before, the cars that come with a single stage manifold aren't programmed to open the 3rd stage of the DISA valves. Also, the stock 328/325 tune limits the maximum valve lift, uses a more conservative VANOS map, and runs significantly leaner at full throttle."

My response -
Thanks for elaborating. So...what are the choices to make it work properly: AA tune, Turner Motorsports tune, and...what else??

There are a few out there. Sure you will get a more specific response soon. However, the turner tune is the AA tune. Which is the one I have with the 3 stage and love it! Do it my friend!

Thanks! AA tune has been ordered and will be here tomorrow AM. (Thank you Andrew!!!) Sapphire will "go under the knife" in the AM and emerge a "331"*...no longer just another pretty face.

(*PE, Eurobox/K&N filter/charcoal delete, 3.0 manifold conversion and AA tune = ???...a 329, 330, 331, or 332? )

Installed yesterday!!!!

After install I drove it for 25 miles hwy before time was flashed.
I initially did not feel a difference. After flashed with AA tune drove it around for 5-10 min. Time will tell, 30 ponies should be very noticeable!!. At what point did everyone start noticing the the power

Anyone else have faults like mine?

Well, got all of the work done (Eurobox, manifold conversion and AA tune) and LOVED IT...right up 'til the first protection mode event. It has now had 4 of these events, each time throwing the same codes (that are picked...and can be cleared...by the BMWhat app/iPhone.

Has anyone else had this problem...throwing faults that send the car into protection mode after the conversion and a tune?

Andrew and the engineer at AA have jumped right on it and are rechecking everything but I'm afraid it's my car, not the tune. Here is a link to the thread I started on this in the Coding section, which may have been the wrong place to post it. The thread gives a little history of the car that may or may not be important.

its gonna take a while 2-300 miles for adaptation to kick in, u will notice first stage creeps up all of the sudden

Can I reset adaptations and make it sooner???? I have the Bav tech tool? If so which adaptations should I reset?

Just a thought!!

Also I know my power range was 2nd and 3rd gear etc between 5k-7k rpm with the stage 3 anyone know?

Is that what's happening to mine...adaptations taking place? Does the car experience faults or problems like I'm having (above) during this time?

But... (there's always a but...) pony-wise, I'm really not sure of the gains; I will have to let the dyno speak for that.

But before going to the dyno, I have something to handle. I have some intermitent issues that happened to me three times so far. Once before the swap and twice since then. So Its more related to the tune then the swap itself. When I'm first at the red light on a complete stop and I want to step on it hard, the car have a major shutter and then procede to the acceleration. Almost like I would be hitting the brakes while releasing the clutch. So i've tried to go easy on the setup at first, but the tune should be fully adapted to both setups when those issues happened. So I had to postpone that drag session I was supposed to go to yesterday of course.

I'm gonna give it some time, but if its not going away, i'm gonna need to investigate further. Tomorrow night i'm gonna scan the car to see if there's any hidden codes that popped up.

But all in all, the swap is very straight forward. Take your time to avoid snapping anything you dont want to and everything's gonna be fine. If I wouldnt have been slowed down by my sore back, I would say I would have been done in 4.5-5h tops. Just be sure to get the proper screws. I didnt need the vent hose so I guess you dont absolutely need to buy it.

Those who are on the edge of doing it, just do it. And if you're not comfortable doing it, then add $350 on your budget for installation and you wont regret it. But dont forget the AA tune! So its a $950 worth of parts and a $499 software for a major upgrade in torque and hp.

But I would strongly recommend buying new parts. That's what I did and I wouldnt have done it with used parts just to save a couple hundreds.

I'm gonna repost when my issue is handled and when i'm ready to dyno.
Did you ever find out the cause of the shutter issue? I'm having the same problem once AA tune was loaded after car adapted. Shutter happen prior to stage 3 install and after, intermittently??
I thought it was my clutch, lol
1.plugs are new and coil packs
2. Cleaned maf sensor with cleaner

Try clearing adaptations and seeing if that helps. The next step would be cleaing the vanos solenoids - they cause all sorts of wonky problems.
