Turbo Issues? Faint Siren Sound

Hey guys,

Starting to get a faint siren sound, think this is turbo related. The noise is there between 1000 - 2000rpm. More so when you lift off.

There seem to be no lose in boost or power. Any suggestion?

I'm going to strip down the front pipework over the weekend and check to see if there is any play in the spindle.

Any other suggestions would be great.

Cheers.
G.

Mine makes a similar sound at low speeds - frequency proportional to engine speed. I think my issue is worn belt tensioners on the serpentine belt. I plan to replace belt, idler and tensioner during the next few weeks.

Worn belts or pulleys or bearings can make a noise. Need to have someone rev the engine whilst you look around in the bay. Turbo is drivers side. If the noise isn't coming from there it's definitely not turbo.

Also have to remember that turbos do make noise, they aren't silent. With the window down I can hear mine.

if the turbo was failing, the noise would get worse as speed increased, the fact that its going away is a good thing.

could also be the compressor blades rubbing the turbine housing.

Erm...in my experience, police siren sound is classic for failing turbo on a TD engine.

and that siren sound will increase with engine load if it was the turbo going, it wouldn't disappear when the turbo is getting pushed harder

If it's at low RPM, it's far more likely to be belt related.

How do I know? My aux belt tensioner was going and whining.

As I said, listen for where the noise is, can easily rule out a turbo as no belts are near it really.

my 2p';s worth .. as had the same issue on our e39 530d , turns out it was vacuum hose had gone brittle and was leaking air in under full vacuum and thus not pulling the actuator back far enough so the turbo wasn't spooling up to it's proper speed .. hence the woooing / siren noise

The noise is normal until the turbo is above a certain RPM, like all fans it will get louder and then quieter as it speeds up.

Thanks guys, sorry for the slow reply's.

I haven't stripped it down, but the sound seems to have gone. Still going to strip down and try and check all pipes etc.

Hopefully will have an update soon.

Finally got round to sorting this problem. Turned out to be the air con pump was on its way out. Changed that along with a new aux belt and a regas. All fixed.

Did check the turbo also and it feels nice and tight. Hopefully do a lot of miles! :-)
