Steve, congratulations on your driver award at the spring BMWCCA HPDE HPR. I wish I could have spoken with you more instead of the quick hello we had.

Also: the summer DS still has room available (which is strange since it's only 3 weeks away):

Even get A/C and radio for my soft ass, but at least I won't have to press and hold this "DTC" button every time I want to drive.
Oh woe is me, I think my Saturday student is this guy - and he's in A group! He says he does auto-x a lot. Was it white by chance?

What would you fellow Coloradans recommend using as a Winter set-up?
I was planning on just buying steelies or some sort of skinny wheels for the winter and running Michelin X-Ice 3's. I would prefer to get a nice aftermarket set of wheels for early Fall, Summer, and late Spring and use my stock 162's as my Winter set up but I'm worried about the width.

I have an '07 335i sport running 225's up front and 255's in the rear, so I'm worried 9" is overkill for Winter tires. It's RWD and I plan to make the drive from Boulder to the mountains (Key, Breck, Vail, etc) just about every weekend, so I need the absolute best winter set-up I can run.

Unless I hear rave reviews about some other tires I'm pretty set on the X-Ice 3's. Michelin seems to be the dominant tire manufacturer, so I don't see myself moving away from Michelins.

I've been through 4 winters on my Blizzaks LM25s and have been very happy with them (RWD, 335, ZSP, auto). I run a staggered setup on the stock 287 wheels (225 in front, 255 in rear). In retrospect, I'd go with a square setup, even if it stretched a bit on the wider rear wheel. And clearly, the narrower you go, the better.

A couple additional thoughts:

Sport package, RWD E9xs ride pretty low, which has been a bigger issue to me than RWD. If the snow is deep, the plowing can be tough.

I also don't really go up to the mountains during the winter, so I can't say how good the setup would be for winter mountain driving. In Colorado Springs we really only get a handful of days where the snow actually sticks to the roads for more than the morning.

I know several people at my work that run the X-Ice and love them. And Michelin does make great tires (I love my summer PSS). So probably can't go wrong there either.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice - that actually leads me to my next question. How are the Super Sports on the colder mornings?
I'll be running my Summer set-up a lot in early fall and late spring when there is the potential for the temps to drop below freezing in the mornings and late at night.
I had Super Sports on my 535i and I absolutely loved them. I actually just had them replaced with A/S 3's because the PSS were on back-order for the 275's.

My only concern with the PSS is how they handle in the cold temperatures? Is it worth it to sacrifice handling for the A/S 3's which are All Seasons or will the PSS do just fine in 20 degree weather (assuming its not icy)?
I really love the Super Sports so I'm leaning that direction as of right now.

I've also heard great things about the Blizzaks so its pretty much between X-Ice 3's and the Blizzaks. Hopefully I get a chance to test them before I make a decision, but they're both top rated Ice/Snow tires so I'm sure I can't go wrong with either.

They aren't great on cold mornings, especially if there is a little moisture on the ground. But they aren't dangerous either. Just don't floor it off the line and you'll be fine. I pull my summers off as late as possible and put them on as early as possible - the squishiness of winter tires isn't my favorite. We always get a dusting here and there and I'm fine if I'm smart about it. But I don't have far to work and I go in before 7AM so there aren't many cars on the road usually.

I run Blizzak LM-60's with Rial Salerno 17" wheels (I think you can only get them from TireRack) in the winter and have never had any issues whatsoever - and I head up to the mountains nearly every weekend.

+1 on that, especially the tire change timing and winter tires being a softer compound.

I prefer the "Performance Winter Tire" over the pure "Studless Winter" tire and so I have been running the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3 for the last four winters - they dry corner better than some A/S tires. In my stinky opinion Colorado is too dry (and sunny ) to warrant the "Studless Winter" tires - and I go skiing a lot too. Mostly it's snow height that is the limiting factor, not traction. Let me correct that: I have never ever had a traction issue with those tires. But yea, getting the "pure" winter tires will allow you to become an Eisenhower Tunnel or Loveland Pass taxi.

I totally agree with you Alex, on the Bimmers I prefer a performance winter over a studless winter. While the snow traction is compromised a little, the performance you gain back is very significant, in most cases compares very well to a good all season for performance. We just don't have snow on the road enough around the metro area in the winter to justify a studless winter.

The height issue is the reason I use my E34 vs. my E92 for the winter. Now if I lived on Palmer Divide or in the foothills, I would probably tend to get studless snows.

Hello newcomers.

I am behind on my C&D reading and missed reading last year's October issue until this morning. Here's more of what I was talking about: (appears as a September 24th online article) http://blog.caranddriver.com/a-tale-...-so-different/

So I've been doing my reading/research about tunes with regards to oil coolers and the necessity of them. I'm surprised as how many people are FBO without an oil cooler. They're saying that they never got over 250 when driving before and still don't, so I figured I'd pay more notice to my oil temps for a few weeks and then go from there. Well, needless to say, my temps are at 255 just driving around town and to/from Denver. Lame. Even without any mods I feel like the car needs to have a cooler, so I guess I'm back to the home build kit and going to hire out my roommate to fab me up some brackets! I so badly want a tune on this car it's killing me!

Random question: What were/are you all running at Bandimere when stock? I've been trying to bench race for the last while and trying to figure out what to expect as I haven't been able to get up to the track yet.

To anyone that has transferred the registration of a car from one state to another. What are the transfer fees like? You don't have to pay sales tax with this type of transfers, correct?

I have a car currently registered in CA, I will be moving to CO monday and want to see what kind of fees to expect once I get to the CO DMV. I'm assuming just a registration fee, and license fee, correct?(<$200)

No sales tax, just registration fees which are based on the value and age of the car (along with some other stuff thrown in there). The cost depends on where you are located, but for my 07 335i last year they were $290

You will also have to get emissions done if you are moving to the metro area, which is $25 I think.

Also, if you itemize your taxes, you can write off the ownership tax portion of the registration, so make sure and keep that in mind come April 15th.
