Lymphodema

Bit of a random one, but has anyone got this? I have had a swollen leg for a long time and got diagnosed with it a week ago.

Waiting for a scan before they start treatment but as usual its a 6 week wait. It could seriously progress by then so just wondering if anybody has any experience with the treatment for it?

Depends on the cause.
How bad is it? Keep your leg well moisturised (your skin will stretch as it swells), elevated when possible and keep your toes moving (helps circulation).
Treatment usually involves, any, some, or all of these;
Bandaging
Massage
Exercise
Compression (similar to bandaging)
It's about controlling the swelling.

Let us know how you get on.

I had celulitus a few years back and they think that has caused the damage to the lymph. I want to start treatment asap, none of this waiting 6 weeks malarky. its pretty bad already. trousers are tight round my calf.

Trying to keep my foot elevated at work is a bit of a pig. May see if i can find a local specialist to crack on.

From what I know (and don't take this as gospel!) I don't think it's just a general massage, it's about moving the excess fluid as the lymphatic system is effectively broken and not doing its job (ie) not moving lymph (white blood cells) around like it should. If you're that concerned I would go back to the GP and ask them for a urgent referral. Depends on the extend of it (believe me, it would need to be pretty bad, as in leg over twice the size of normal!)
