Went to get fuel on the way home tonight. Diesel was 107.9p per litre.

Of which about 75p is going to those w*****r at the Treasury. If you ask me the Govt are just asking for trouble by simply continuing to rake in the extra tax created by the surge in oil prices and making absolutely no comment. Correct me if I am wrong but it is the VAT element which is variable, the fuel duty is fixed.

We will, of course, pay double if oil remains at these ridiculously high levels, high oil prices will feed inflation which will in turn mean that interest rates will not fall or may even have to rise. Isn't life fair! So long as those greedy OPEC members make even more money

To be honest it has been a consideration ......................................for about 10mins but the car is my toy for W/ends,so i figure where the 335d was not really a drinker,the M is gonna be a thirsty one

Was once told by an ex-production manager of a BP refinery that diesel is much cheaper to produce than petrol. So why the difference at the pumps & who is pocketing the difference

The truth about cars like expensive BMWs is that the depreciation far exceeds the fuel, tyre, servicing costs, etc.

But, .... this is kind of hidden on a daily basis and we justify the cost of that new car because it's just so much better than are current car. (In our minds anyway)

But when you see fuel at this price and you know how much is tax it is just hard to stomach.

Very good point silver As the latest ones are coming in at £1Bn a piece (and there are 7 of them) I suggest that you all do an extra 10,000 miles per year to pay for U238! (please)

What are the new subs and who is building them. Are they built by the yobs in Barrow still?

£1Bn a piece this is alot of money do we really need them or can't we just piggy back of what America has?

Gibbo, was that ordinary diesel or ultimate etc? Filled up this afternoon & ordinary diesel had just gone upto 99.9p.

Regular Esso Unleaded the garage on the way home is normally 1 or 2p a litre more expensive than the cheapest around.

They are built by BAe (submarine solutions) in Barrow, the only yard authorised to build Nuclear submarines. I was there a few weeks ago and was amazed by the inactivity. I think there are only something like 2000 employees now, as opposed to about 10,000 in its heyday. I have plenty of stories about the place and the people who build the boats, but not here!

Yes they are expensive, submarines always will be, I was slightly flippant in saying they are all £1Bn a piece. The first one is, economies of scale will reduce the cost of the later hulls but not by a huge amount. If you think that is expensive, the first of the new generation destroyers (Type 45 for you Navy geeks/groupies) is coming in at about the same. Now that is a waste of money for a 'skimmer'- but please don't quote me on that standing by for flak from Bumps

Do we need them? Of course we do, Govt policy says so! If we want a Trident replacement, assuming it is a submarine, we need to keep building them on a continous basis else the manufacturing expertise evaporates and you will never regain it. We are close with the US but not completely reliant. In comparison they have 56 Attack submarines to our 9!

I was on the boat three weeks ago, it is a huge step change in capability from the previous class of SSN, one of which was my previous command. Astute is absolutely awesome, one of those is on my xmas list

The bed (bunk) thing is amusing, but submariners do like their beauty sleep! Seriously, the boat is 50% bigger than the previous class but the accommodation is actually smaller. Not a problem cos we are roughy toughy types and the extra money makes it all worth while
