320d/330d miles?
Hi guys,
I am looking for get a 320 or 330 diesel after selling my 130i. I have seen this one as it has all the specs I would like (compared to my 1er) but the mileage is putting me off. Assuming it has been serviced on time etc would it still be a good buy or is the price abit too much? http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...1409067185595/ other two http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...1409147386154/ http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...1408066391283/ Cheers |

I'd say the three litre will handle the miles better and be more in line with the power of the 130i.
Mileage wise its never bothered me condition of the car is the key point to consider. |

Personally, I'd never consider any car (regardless of reputation) with mileage in excess of 100k. Even BMW warranty wont cover there own with mileage in excess of that. I understand that the way the car has been cared for and serviced has a bearing on longevity, but I'd prefer a low mileage example, looked after in the same manner. Don't forget, that's my personal opinion and in no way does that reflect on cars with mileage over 100k. Each to their own.

To be fair, I'd never have considered a higher mileage car before this one. My previous were all bought around 50k, but I bought this one on 96k (325D). I do believe the 3 litre holds up better, and I decided to go ahead and buy mine because after the test drive I was convinced it was still in good condition, and it drove much better than my 60,000 mile 1 series. It's now on 101,000 and still drives absolutely fine, and there are no problems with it as far as I can tell, steering/clutch/gearbox feel tight and certainly nothing like my girlfriends' knackered 100k clio.
Having said that, although a 3 litre diesel BMW will fare much better over the mileage, you're still going to find potential problems that any car can have, such as suspension, turbo, air con system and DPF issues that are much more likely if not inevitable after 100k, certainly 150k. Also, I'm probably going to get shot down for this, but if it's an N47 engined 320D then don't do it! My 1 series went at 63k, and although not so widespread here over on babybmw theres a worryingly large amount of cases, I certainly would not trust this engine at a high mileage! |

Looks very clean but that's a lot of miles! A friend of my family regularly drives his 520d to the south of France and back, and has over 200k miles. The car runs like new. Difference is, he's put all the miles on it so he knows everything about it and how it was cared for.
I know the cars can take that sort of mileage, but personally, I wouldn't do it.

Miles are only important because people think it is. A bit like leather seats. Not what you should have in a car with sporty ideas but if you dont have it you cant sell it.
Service history and miles can easily be compared by people who know nothing about cars. Manufacturers know this which is why a manufacturer of tvs cars or fridges will have bigger numbers than the competition. Lots of bits on cars age if they are used or not and more cars are damaged from lack of use than the other way around but if a person cannot trust their own judgement regarding wear and tear, buying a new low miles example will give them a good chance of not having to worry. A 30k car needs a lot more thought than a 5k car as the potential for loosing money is high. As for me I dont get hung up on any one issue. |

Worked out I am only going to be doing around 7-9k a year so diesel may not be worth it (maybe if I still have my trusty 1.4 tdi polo lol) but instead seen this for sale although no pics....

in reference to your dilemma.
my 320D has coming up for 195,000 on it. runs sweet (apart from a couple of glow plugs, but they can go on any car at any mileage.) i would take a high mileage 330D over a 320D no question. |

What sort of mpg does a 335i do? mid 30s?
I worked out I am only doing around 7-8k a year at my new job so wondering if its worth getting a diesel, its mainly A road route at 50mph. I used this a calculator here... http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/c...alculator.html Fuel around my area (cheapest) Unleaded 95: 125.9 p/L Diesel: 132.9 p/L 3/530d at 45mpg - 8k annual = £1006.94 335i at 30mpg - 8k annual = £1430.85 |

You're going to struggle to do 30mpg in the 335i IMO.
OK, grandad driving behind big busses and lorries, but considering the intentions of the car/engine, you're going to be slightly more spirited than that. You'll be able to drive normally in the diesel and get those figures all day long. I'm not bashing the petrols (most of my previous cars were) but if you're talking about economy, it's a no brainer. |
