Red face Upgrades Question...?

Tons of threads in here talk about software upgrade this, and that. Kinda sounding like people are going every other week to get something on their car upgraded. I havent ordered my car yet, hopefully this weekend, but what I am wondering is will my car need to be upgraded this much too? OR are these earlier production cars that need the software upgrades.
AND if my car will also need these upgrades, will the car tell me, or do I have to wait till something doesnt work, and then take it in.

If you are ordering your car this weekend then you dont need to update youll probablly be like a 3/06 or 4/06 production car, and the software update is for pre september 05 cars i believe.

There is quite a bit of jawboneing about software upgrades but it isn't something to worry about. Some cars do not need any upgrades. You would be well advised to steer clear of diagnosing your car. If (big if) you experience symptoms that seem out of the norm, tell the service department about the symptoms and let the professionals do the diagnosis. You will be happier and the service department will be more likely to take you seriously.

What about the MP3 function..... that the RDS and improved iDrive speed are all big plusses for the update on Pre-September cars; afterwards there is not "real" additions! Best of Luck!

Mine is a pre-september and I still haven't taken it in for the software update. I see the mp3 function enabled and a faster idrive as the only benefits. I really haven't had any problems and haven't been in the mood to drive all the way up to scranton to my dealer, so I figure I'll just get it done the next time I need to go up there for something.

But if you're a post-september, you should be ok with the updates. Ask your dealer to make sure, if you want.

I don't play MP3 cds so its pretty much worthless for me to go do it.

Ive also heard of diminished 0 to 60 performance of the car with an update.

I will say that my car feels like it has more torque now available sooner, and I have improved gas mileage since the 20.1 update. The power curve is more fluid and has no flat spots. Not sure about the 0-60 numbers but I definately feel a difference as does the fiance, she asked me if I added something to the car (without her knowing) because as she said.... her head goes back more when I get on it. Who knows though.... others have said the same thing with the latest update as well. Best of luck!

My BMWs have spent more time in the shop than every other car I've owned COMBINED. Most of this has been for software updates and related things that weren't quite right. In my case, my E90 was one of the first made (April '05) and needed a lot of updating just to get the features to be available. I also had problems with both cars and bluetooth not being reliable and have had an update for that (which worked great, BTW).

The advice given to not self diagnose your car is good advice - but the problem that many of us find is that we know more than the SA about the car and what updates and service bullitens are available.
